Is anyone else planning to go see [March of the Penguins](http://imdb.com/title/tt0428803/)? I believe it opens tomorrow.
And then my queer bookclub just spammed me with a children’s book that looks like a good read, [And Tango Makes Three](http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0689878451/qid=1120755614/sr=8-1/ref=pd_bbs_ur_1/103-5241779-3388601?v=glance&s=books&n=507846)
I love penguins! I must’ve spent days of my childhood flipping through my parents’ old Time/Life wildlife books, my favorite of which chronicled the penguin migration.

It’s coming to The Charles. Morgan Freeman does the narration.
“March of the Penguins” looks great, and since we’re in the “nature documentary” land, there’s also a doc out (coming out) called Grizzly Man that is about that nut job that lived with bears in Alaska until he finally got mauled by one.
[IMDB](http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0427312/) lists it as a TV movie, but it too, is coming to the local theater, The Charles.

Wow. Not only is it coming to The Charles, it’s coming tomorrow! I WAS going to Fuddruckers with a bunch of rowdy friends (we’ve got a bet going that one of 'em can’t finish the one pound burger), now I may have to go see _March of the Penguins_ instead.

The Best Penguin movies ever: [Animated](http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0108598/) and [Live Action](http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0035100/) divisions. I imagine the OP will be the winner in the Documentary division.

Why, **UrbanChic** , whatever could you mean?
One time I was at The Charles by myself watching _Gladiator_ (this seems like I was asking for it in restrospect) and a guy came down the aisle and asked if he could sit in my lap.
Me : :eek:
He was actually apologetic after I told him to go to hell.
Anyway. . .Penguins. . .the previews made it look awesome. Violent, struggling, unbelievable weather. Great footage, underwater footage. Directed by a Frenchman. They seem to have a monopoly on nature docs.

I’ll tell ya a little story.
These guys are obnoxious, lewd and have no shame. Years ago we all decided we were going to go see _The Blair Witch Project_ together. It started out as just four of us which soon grew to nine.
On the evening of the movie, we ALL meet at Pizzaria Uno’s, get crazy drunk (not me, but I was tipsy enough, though) and take a few cabs up to The Charles. The line was outrageous. Yum (his name’s William, but he goes by the second syllable) decides to entertain the crowd by belting out a drunken rendition of _That’s What Friends are For_. He then proceeds to chat up this old-ish lady waiting in line. He actually got her phone number–I have to admit it was pretty fucking funny.
Anyway, an hour into the crapfest that was Blair Witch, half of them start going MST3K on this flick. Loudly. We almost get bounced out of the theatre but smooth talking Paul saved our asses.
When the movie was over, people actually yelled at us on the way out of the theatre, not that I blame them, either. Suffice it to say, I don’t hang out with these guys all that much. They’re still friends and I get together with them once or twice a year for crazy shit like tomorrow night.
We’re call ourselves a Benneton ad, by the way, because I’m black, Yum’s white with blonde hair, Paul’s Korean and Dave’s white with brown hair.

I dug up this msnbc [review](http://www.msnbc.msn.com/?&&id=8292753&) I read a while back. It is crappily written, imho, and the author has some really interesting logic.

At least she recommended the film.

I just attended a free advanced screening.
I was rolling my eyes at some of the anthropomorphism like the review \*\*honeydewgrrl \*\* quoted, but it was a fun movie. And I wouldn’t peg penguin fathers as so inattentive–they go without food for almost 4 months in order to court a female and then keep the egg warm while she goes and eats. Once she comes back, they call to their chick and listen to their chick so the two of them can recognize each other when the father returns. The movie did say that the parents alternate watching the chick and going to get more food.
Penguin chicks are too cute. I thought it was funny that their parents abandon them without even teaching them how to swim. I guess I was expecting a learning phase, a la geese or ducks.

I can’t wait to see this. It is opening at our local arthouse, but I know I’m going to miss it this go-around due to studying. Still, I’ll be first in line to rent it! Penguins are my favorite birds, and probably my favorite animals right after cats. I’ve always wanted to hug a real live penguin.

Luc Jacquet directed Penguins.
According to IMDB, Perrin also did the NARRATION for the movie Microcosmos, but not the direction.
