I have thrown pennies off the observation deck of the Empire State Building. Me and my brothers threw a ton of them when we went there as kids. Nothing happened. You have to fling them pretty far out to get them past the bulge of the building, and then they disappear from sight. It was rather disappointing for us.
ETA there were no signs saying not to do it, and no one tried to stop us. It was 1982.
