# People are fucking assholes

Not to venture off into GQ in the pit, but if your boss requires you to park in a certain location, and it has a history of being break-ins, it seems to me reasonable that the company’s insurance should reimburse you for your loss. Am I completely off base here?

Don’t put stuff in your car that you don’t want stolen. Don’t drive a car that you don’t want stolen. I don’t even bother to lock my car anymore, and still, no one has stolen it.

Yeah, don’t ever leave anything remotely valuable (or that looks like it could contain something remotely valuable, like a purse/backpack/briefcase) sitting out in the open. This includes CDs. Chuck anything that might tempt a smash’n’grab in the glove compartment or the trunk.

Don’t drive a car you don’t want stolen? Fuckers will steal anything. OK, don’t have a car, don’t have a car stereo, don’t have a damn thing, because it might get stolen.
Wrong answer. I won’t let my “quality of living” go down just because some miserable scumbag is too lazy to work for his own stuff. I won’t do without just because some shit bag wants to get over.

Keep your good stuff in your trunk - you can get stereos and other items that plug in/un-plug. If they can’t see it, it isn’t a convenient item, and they’ll likely look elsewhere - thieves are generally risk-averse and/or lazy.
And don’t leave bags or packages in the cabin - they are “grab/surprise bags,” and they might be stolen “just in case.”

I’ve had thousands of dollars worth of stereo equipment stolen in broad daylight in an open parking lot with the alarm going off and people looking on. (One of the people got the plate of the dumb thief’s car, and they were caught! (I still didn’t get anything back.)) I’ve had a 5 year old $49 stereo taken in the middle of the night from my driveway. It doesn’t matter what you have really, thieves are opportunistic and will take what they think they can get away with.
Edit to add: I was more upset about the $49 one. The thousands of dollars one was when I was young and dumb and had no financial obligations. The $49 one was recent, and I was mad that they’d taken from me when I was working so hard and still having so little.

Oh, and if you’re going to put stuff in your trunk, be sure to disable the pop-the-latch-from-inside feature. My friend put her cell phone, iPod, digital camera, etc. in her trunk and went hiking. Someone busted out the driver’s window, popped the trunk and cleaned everything out. I keep mine locked all the time now. It’s not that big of a deal to use the key to open the trunk.

My husband had his car windows tinted and had a new sound system installed a couple of years ago. It wasn’t the best system in the world, but it was something that he wanted and that we’d agreed would be his Father’s day and anniversary present. Not a week later, the window was smashed and the radio/CD player was stolen. He went out in the morning, ready to go to work, found the smashed windshield and missing equipment, and flipped out. After a few minutes of having steam coming out of his ears, he was calm enough to call the cops. They took his report over the phone, and he got the impression that they’d come out and take a statement or do SOMETHING. After a few hours, he called them, wanted to know when they’d drop by, and found out that they didn’t intend to do any such thing. He flipped out again.
The cost to repair and replace everything that was damaged or stolen ran several times the cost of what we’d originally paid to have the windows tinted and the system installed, because the thieves had really wrecked the car. My husband flipped out a third time when he found out how much the repair bill was. Since we opted for a high deductible, we didn’t get much from the insurance company.
I fully support the idea of having thieves repay quintuple the damages they cause, as well as having to pay full retail value for whatever they stole if they can’t give it back.

The Dude: Oh, uh, yeah, uh… a tape deck, some Creedence tapes, and there was a, uh… uh, my briefcase.
I couldn’t resist.
“People are fucking assholes” needs to amended to “Jackass who broke into my car is an asshole.” Let’s have a little perspective. And, far as the cops, definitely do not hold you breath. Our house was broken into two years ago. A female roommate of mine walked in on the burglars, who proceeded to punch the girl and run like hell. She calls the cops. They get a statement, do nothing. Then we get an anonymous letter fingering one of the kids in the foster home across the street. So we mention that to the detective on our case; doesn’t call back. So we call the foster home. Guy there is unhelpful too. Get another letter, call the cops, no dice. Next day, a different foster parent, so a few of us walk over, knock on the door and demand the computer back. That foster parent (shock!) finds the computer, now filled with anal porn. Foster parent asks “You guys going to press charges?” I almost laughed. Sure, we called the detective on the case, noted we had a letter that located some of the things stolen from the home and he didn’t call back. I’ll get right on that.
Thank you, SFPD, for assigning Chief Wiggum to our case.
ETA: I see **Lynn** had a similarly impressive thing happen to her re: the police. They just take the information and write it off as a loss. They’re not going to do shit.

Those people are morons. I wonder if they’ve ever been robbed. I doubt it. It’s violating and nerve racking and makes you feel unsafe in your own house for weeks. I would have LOVED to kick some knees that days.

When I lived in a less than ideal neighborhood in South Central LA my car was broken into 7 times in 3 years. I drove an 89 Nissan Sentra with the stock stereo (that oddly was never taken). The theives got a bottle of Tide, a pack of cigarettes, a parrot sleeping bag, and about 9 bucks in change. Total. Over 7 occurances. People aren’t just assholes, they aren’t very bright.
