Wait a minute – aren’t most nursing home beds twin-sized? So wouldn’t the pillow cases be pointing inward no matter which way you put them? And what if the patient moved them? (I’m constantly flipping my pillows around when I’m trying to fall asleep)

There was the whole thing about “how to dress for a concert”, and how you’re supposed to wear certain concert teeshirts – you’re NOT supposed to wear a teeshirt you bought AT said concert, and it’s better even if you wear a shirt from a different band, etc. I was like, WTF???

And let’s not get into all the “foodie” threads…it’s like people are OBSESSED with what everyone puts into your mouth. Who cares?

Why would anyone have an opinion about other people’s food and beverage choices? I once had a coworker yell at me, because I was still drinking my coffee after it had gotten cold.

And why would anyone have an opinion about someone else’s sexuality or religion, when it has nothing whatsoever to do with them?

The loose ends of the pillows have to face out in order to have them look neat, else, there could be way too much fabric bunched up in the middle, esp if the pillow cases are significantly longer than the pillows. By facing the loose end out, you can put the 2 pillows directly, and neatly, next to each other.

So yeah, it is very important to do it right. If you dont do it right, then what is the point of making up a bed in the first place.

There is also a strict formal procedure to tuck in the sheets at the bottom. Nursing schools teach the correct way to make a bed (…and I think even the U.S. Army used to make soldiers make their beds, and do it a certain way, once upon a time).

Yep!

Actually, it is surprising that there are some people out there in the world in 2010 who dont know which way pillows go.

My pillow cases have no decorative trim. Can I bypass that weird rule? Besides, even if they were facing out, do people actually care about making sure they look at the right pillow side?

No, logically, the open ends of the pillow case should both face the side of the bed away from the bedroom door, concealing them from view.

> Oh god, this is my mother! Putting them away right is even worse – she won’t let anyone else put them away, because “everyone always does it wrong.” So my sister and I will fold towels…and leave them in the laundry basket for her to put away. Otherwise she’ll just go in and do it all over.

If you fold them the right way, they fit into the closet better - and more fit into a smaller space. This is more important for households with high towel usage. Me, I have no strong opinions, but I have been told that the towels are neater and there’s more room left when I fold them (in thirds) and put them away.

Such are the quirks of this particular household that I’m often asked to put the towels away (I’m tall with a decent reach), but rarely asked to fold them. …Why, yes, I have developed a twitch, but not because of this issue.

A nurse once explained to me that the rule in their hospital was that the open ends had to be tucked around and back inside the pillowcase. (I disliked this as it made that pillow end lumpy.) She said it was a fire code thing. Apparently open ends hanging over the edge catch very quickly, and lead the fire straight to the most lethal area of the body.

Makes sense when you’re dealing with incapacitated people, I guess. I still leave mine hanging out at home though.

Gay marriage.
I don’t understand why gay people want so badly to get some meaningless piece of paper from the state as if that somehow validates their relationship. They won’t even accept the civil union thing for legal purposes, they want the full on “marriage” term.
And on the flip side I don’t understand people who vehemently want to stop it from happening. Like it’s some sacred perk for straight people. As if suddenly gay marriage is legal teh gays are come and recruit their sons and daughters to be married into teh gay lifestyle.
Sanctity of marriage? Thbbbbbbb!!!

Pillowcases in the UK have a lip on one side that you pull over the pillow so that it doesn’t work its way out of the case. I don’t understand why pillowcases in the US don’t (actually, I’ve seen it on decorative “shams”, but not on actual pillowcases).

Speaking as someone who’s gay, I don’t fully understand it myself either from a personal perspective because I couldn’t give a shit about getting married.

However from an equal rights perspective if some people can’t do what others can and there’s no good reason for it then that’s just down right discrimination, and hence there isn’t equality. If you’re someone who is in the majority it’s actually quite hard to get your head around quite how badly it sucks to be in a minority and consequently dismiss a right you have as meaningless, but it’s only meaningless to you because you can have it. It’s like saying “well I don’t see what’s so bad about sitting at the back of the bus, it’s not like the seats at the front are much better, and anyway we’re all still having to use public transport so we’re equally badly off, aren’t we?”.

Legal reasons AND the whole idea of “separate but equal”, perhaps?

Don’t discount the legal aspect – you want to be able to have the same rights as a married couple when it comes to estates, taxes, inheritances, insurance, the right to make medical decisions for one another, etc.

And even then, why can’t it just be marriage? Hell, why do STRAIGHT people want to get married then?

I only hear the “why would gay people WANT to get married” from those who have been in acrimonious divorce situations. It’s not that they _truly_ believe it, they just can’t imagine why gay men and women would want a similar plight.
