I’m over 30, but I watched very many classic movies before I turned 30. Still do. Honestly, most new movies just don’t do anything for me. They’re too reliant on spectacle and explosions rather than story and character development.
Is there anybody on The Dope under 30?
Not many, if the poll has any meaning to it.
Took my nephew, 22, and niece, 20, to see Casablanca in a movie theatre. He loved it: really appreciated the dialogue, Claude Raines, and the anti-Nazi theme. Her response was, “that chick was totally manipulating that dude.” Will take one to the upcoming screening with live orchestra.
I still get choked up during the “Play La Marseilles” scene in Casablanca.
Most new blockbusters, you mean?
Spectacle explosion movies comprise a tiny fraction of the hundreds of movies released each year. They get 95% of all movie budget dollars, but are still only like 5% of movies that get released.
Way over 30 but I wanted to vote.
I’ve watched old movies all my life including my teens.
I’ve given up trying to get my daughter to watch anything with any subtlety or complexity because she can’t stay off of her phone. I look over at her and I just know she has no idea what is going on. Couple of times I was able to convince her that she needed to pay attention and she actually enjoyed it, like with The Usual Suspects. I know not a classic movie but used to make a point.
