I seem to recall reading a few years ago, about the death of the last person who had worked as a secretary for Hitler. This lady – while she claimed to have been horrified to learn what he had got up to as Fuehrer – apparently maintained stoutly, as long as she lived, that she had found him a kind and considerate boss; and had, personally, a strong liking for him. (I don’t think I have ever come across any reference to anyone having, re genuine personal acquaintance, a good word to say about Stalin.)
Now that you mention it, I’ve never heard anyone have a kind word about GW Bush either.
I think the original for this trope was Evelyn McHale (warning: pretty dead woman photo). Mourning in proportion to pulchritude always carries this discomforting subtext “aw, what a waste: I would have wanted to fuck her!”
I remember reading Rise and fall of the third reich by William Shirer in which he recounts in the last day in the bunker before he offed himself, the women in the bunker had an impromptu party, which was disturbing Hitler’s sleep, and he very politely went out of his room and asked them to keep quieter.
Orson Scott Card the science-fiction writer has his brilliant moments and there are the depressing rest.
One of hs good books for the idea if nothing else is “Speaker For the Dead”. In this book a person has the job of speakig for someone who has died. The “speaking” is warts and all, no eliding the bad bits, a total story of that persons life which ultimately is full and valued.
It is an interesting and thoughtful discussion about what a human life means.
“Ken McElroy kept his guns in good working order and was interested in livestock. He sure kept folks around here on their toes. There’ll never be another like him.”
Some of the women in this photo of Dillinger in the Chicago morgue seem to be registering their regrets. (it’s just his arm)
Is this an attempted whoosh? I’ve heard that both GW Bush and Bill Clinton are both immensely likeable in person from multiple accounts, and in GWB’s case, from someone who met him.
Does that mean that everyone loved their politics? No, but that’s their ‘work’ persona and beliefs, not necessarily the man himself.
On my local TV news just the other day, after the suspect in a rather violent crime was gunned down in a shootout with police, a woman interviewed from his neighborhood said:
“Can’t say I’m surprised. That guy was always trouble.”
Relevant Onion article.
I’m removing the video you seemed to randomly tack on to the end of the OP, since it doesn’t seem to have anything to do with the OP.
I’m a Democrat. I think Bush II was a perfectly awful president. But I also think he’s a good man – a better man than, say, Clinton, who was a much better president. I think GW is probably a good father and husband who genuinely thought he was doing the best he could for his country.
You know, if the terrorists/drunk driver/ dumpster truck had not got hi, I would have offed him myself. Fucking hated that dude… nah does not quite work.
Thank you! What a horrific thing to post, and for no apparent reason. I was going to report it (and I seriously don’t think I’ve ever reported a post in my time here), but then I got distracted by something shiny or 80 proof or something. Seems like I’m the only one in this thread who thought WTF.
The reason I had no reaction to the video was because by the time I first opened this thread, the video was gone (and so I was wondering why people were talking about a video that apparently wasn’t there.) So I’m glad I didn’t see the video, judging by the reactions of those who did see it.
OK, give - what was the video about
I’m willing to bet that if you met either one of these guys in a bar you’d like them, might even become friends.
On the other hand once you knew them if someone asked you if they should be president your immediate reaction would be “Are you fuckin’ crazy? I don’t trust that asshole alone with my sister!”
A dashcam somewhere in Russia recorded a freak accident where a brick came off a passing truck(I think) and smashed the windscreen and killed the front passenger. It’s not visually graphic but you hear the screams of the driver.
Yikes!
Yeah, there’s no reason to spring that on anyone
