People with 'Support the Troops' bumper stickers: why?

I think there are many pro-military types who truly confuse hating the military with hating the war. I don’t think there are very many people out there who actually hate the troops (I’ve certainly never met one, and I have a lot of radical colleagues) or who blame the troops for the actions of our government, but there is this persistent notion facilitated by right-wing propaganda that these two things are equivalent..

I left a message board back in the day because when I mentioned my husband was deployed I got told they hoped he would get killed because he was military and involved in the war.

This is timely, because yesterday I saw one that said “If you’re not willing to stand behind our troops, feel free to stand in front of them.” I wonder how many people this person met that hate the troops…apparently enough to purchase a bumper sticker that advocates their death.
