People You Like Despite Not Loving Their Art

As a 43-year-old, I find that interesting. To me, he was always a stand-up comedian. I know he was on Mork & Mindy when I was young, but, as a kid, I remember three great stand-up acts as being foundational for my understanding and appreciation of stand-up comedy: Robin Williams at the Met, Bill Cosby “Himself,” and Eddie Murphy “Raw.” To me, Robin Williams will always be a stand-up comedian first and foremost. I loved his manic, rapid-fire, stream-of-conscious energy.

This.

Haven’t read that one yet, but I have the strangest feeling I have it as a ebook and just never got around to it. If that’s true I’ll definitely have to give it a go.

I don’t know if I’d go quite that far on her voice, but I don’t (usually*) enjoy it.
Still, she seems to be really cool and funny, and she does a whole hell of a lot that she doesn’t seem to trumpet - she does it because she thinks it’s right.
And like I say, I’d bet she’d be a hoot to hang out with.
*She does do a nice cover of ‘Seven Bridges Road’.

Assuming you stretch the term art to cover it, I am no fan of professional wrestling. And I don’t think I’ve seen any of his movies. But from everything I’ve heard John Cena is a wonderful human being.

Did you ever slow down her Jolene album? The song itself is too fast to convey the emotion, so I found a version played on a 33 instead of a 45.

It’s amazing how much better her voice sounds. It always sounded like a sped up recording to me, and this seems to show it. She’s secretly a tenor who is moving at a faster rate than the rest of us, I guess.

Andy Warhol.

Ditto Justin Timberlake. Not a fan of his music, but I want to hang out with him.
Lady Gaga seems like she would be cool and down-to-earth if her glamour was stripped away, and not be an insecure attention-demanding diva.
I didn’t really care for Henry Rollins’s music, but I went to one of his spoken-word performances and consider it one of the high points of my life.
I don’t identify with Ted Nugent’s politics or music, but he has incredible energy. I heard him in a radio interview and considered becoming a survivalist for a minute.

Speaking of Eddie Murphy, most have never seen him live doing stand-up… “Raw” was the first comedy special I ever saw, with the suggestion my friend weeks after graduation, which led me to Mort Sahl, Bill Hicks, and George Carlin eventually

Have you ever heard any comedians that are actually funny?

I took a group of kids to see him speak at the Library of Congress. He was great with them. While I am a fan of old school wrasslin’, I’m not a fan of WWE. I also had a great experience hosting Raven and Molly Holly in the early 2000s.

James Blunt. Can’t stand his music, but he’s a master at the Twitter clap back, and seems like a pretty down-to-earth guy. Ed Sheeren, too.

He was hilarious in Trainwreck.

On that note… I’m not a sports person. I couldn’t care less about football. I’d never heard of Colin Kapernick before the whole brouhaha started up over the national anthem. Everything I’ve seen about him makes me think he is a genuinely good person, better than most. More a saint than the villain his detractors try to paint him as.

I have to second/third Dolly Parton. I had the pleasure of winning a radio contest that allowed me to meet her backstage before a concert. When all the handshaking and picture taking was over, she grabbed my hand and said “No, honey, you stay. I like you!” She is indeed warm, personable, sharp as a tack and funny as a crutch. And I, too, admire the charity work she does without seeking any recognition for it. Speaks of good character.

But I do not like country music. Never have. I did rather enjoy the album Dolly did with Emmy Lou Harris and Linda Rondstadt called “Wildflowers” where they sung as a trio on some traditional folk songs and church music. But still not enough to buy the album.

Keanu Reeves seems like a real prince of a guy which is amazing considering how big a star he is. But he has starred in two great movies, three good ones, and a huge amount of stuff that looks like utter crap.

Funnily enough, with Tom Cruise it’s the other way round for me… as a person I wouldn’t want to come near him or touch him with a long pole but I watch his movies because he is at the same time both Tom Cruise and credible in each role (except for Jack Reacher).
