Sure on slippery days we leave extra space - some people do it as a matter of course, though, and I just don’t see the logic. There’s being cautious, and there’s being paranoid, careless, or just plain inept. \*\*

I guess it depends on what you consider “too far”. You mentioned 50 feet as being too far. That’s what? 3 car lengths?

I like to stay back at least far enough to see the tires and pavement (maybe 3/4’s a car length? I’m bad at math, all forms), and most other folks here do too, even in the summer months.

I don’t live in a cold climate, but I remember being taught the “back tires and a bit of pavement” rule in Driver’s Ed. You should never pull right up on someone’s back end.

I agree completely; you _shouldn’t_ pull right up to someone’s car’s back end - I drive a standard, and when I roll back a couple of inches starting out on a steep hill, I don’t want to have to worry that I’m going to hit your car. (I do notice that at the next stop light, I have plenty 'o room back there, though :D) I stop so I can see pavement under the back tire of the car in front of me, and don’t see any reason to stop further back or closer in, except in slippery conditions.
