This is my newest project, Smitty. [![](https://i.imgur.com/ngW5YnS.jpg) ](https://i.imgur.com/ngW5YnS.jpg) Long story short, they told me he had too many issues and was going to spend the rest of his life in that cage. He’s declawed and blind in one eye and was very angry/frightened when he first arrived (but wouldn’t you be, if you were him?). He doesn’t always want to be physically handled, like for nail trims or veterinary care. And I’m told it takes him a few minutes to warm up to new people. But he’s only like six years old and, overall, a healthy cat. And he loves treats and gentle attention. And “a few minutes to warm up” really does just mean a few minutes. And a lot of defensive behavior is due to the shelter just being a weird, wild, stressful, unnatural, and chaotic place for a cat to live and possibly the fact that being declawed and half-blind makes him vulnerable. And there are people out there who really will have the patience to help him transition to a new home. And those eyes- do they not break your heart? So… suffice it to say that I disagree with the assessment that he’s going to be a lifer. There’s a home out there for him and I’m going to do everything I can to find it. ---

With Smitty I think it would be easy to be smitten. And there are people who prefer the ones who don’t instantly warm up to everyone, but who want to get to know you first. And the declaw and blind eye wouldn’t matter for an indoors-only home (you may well be right that they’re making him defensive, but getting him settled into a quiet home where he gets time to trust the human(s) ought to take care of that.) ---

Exorcism? A black cat? Hmmmm… Ben is proving to be a total sweetie. Somehow he’s already adapted to my weird schedule, and pretty much sleeps through the night. When he’s not doing playful kitten things, he’s on my lap (which is where he happens to be currently). He has a purr-box as loud as any fully-grown cat I’ve heard. ---
