So this bad little boy (who is now named Marvin) came to work with me today. It’s Christmas day and I knew there wouldn’t be too much traffic and that I would be spending the evening away from home. He’s crated or confined to a room alone when I’m not home because he’s a criminal and can’t be trusted. Case in point- this morning, while I was in the shower, he tipped the whole trash can over and was munching away by the time I caught him. We’ve got ten years’ worth of being undersocialized, underexercised, and untrained to conquer. We’re working on housebreaking, but also… it’s been dangerously cold for the past few days, so… that’s a setback. But he’s good about using pee pads. I just would prefer it if he didn’t pee inside my house at all. Anyway, so we went to work today- him and Helena, my other dog. And after we cleaned the office, my co-worker made an alarmed noise. We came to see the problem was and… it was a puddle of very bloody-looking pee. There are several office cats as well as the two dogs and none of us could be sure who had done it. We eventually decided to change out all the litter in the litterboxes for shredded paper for the night to see who was having the problem. Later, though, I took Marvin out to go potty and his pee was like… BRIGHT red. So I’m thinking “Shit. It looked perfectly normal yesterday. I should probably take him to the emergency vet. Of course this would happen on Christmas. God, this is going to be expensive. But if he’s peeing straight blood, I probably shouldn’t delay.” So I went back in, told my co-workers that I’d discovered whose pee it was, and was trying to decide which emergency vet to go to, when… I remembered that he had gotten into the trash can this morning. In fact, he had been unusually interested in the trash last night when I was busy preparing and roasting… beetroot. Oh. Yep. The thing that tempted him into tipping the trash can and the thing he had been chowing down on when I discovered him was beet skins and stems. Mystery solved! He’s fine and I’ll be ordering a more secure kitchen trash can. ---

Good of you to adopt him at that age. I once had a friend who was on trial and if he went to prison his family would have had to move. So he asked me to adopt his eleven year old cat. I did, but told him if he got off with probation I was keeping the cat. He agreed, and did get probation. But it was an open adoption, he could always come and see Vladimir. I had the cat for five years, and when he had to be put down my friend came with me to the vet. Also helped to dig his grave in my back yard. ---

I posted this in the MMP, but Imma gonna cross post just because… I bought a large breed kitten, he will be two in April. I know that he’s a big boy, but because I’m so used to him, I forget…until something happens that reminds me that Gormless George is a BIG kitty who isn’t even fully mature yet. Here he is with his big sissy, the 12 +/- year old moggy. (They are on their kitty bed. They are the only ones who sleep on it but the linen gets changed weekly and the blankets get washed monthly, which is when I vacuum the mattress because GG is a professional shedder.)
