Ok, this is going to be a very short post, buuuuuuut I really need help on this one. We have a pet dwarf bunny that stays in a cage during the day due to the fact we live in Pennsylvania. The problem is that the rabbit every day has feces caked into the fur around its butt. There reaches a point when you simply get tired of bathing it to clean an inch radius around its anus; this point came about a day after we got it. The problem makes itself known by causing a fetid smell. ``` My question to rabbit-owning dopers is: do you have this problem with your bunny? Is there ANYTHING that can be done? ``` ---

I’m a bird guy, not a rabbit guy, but I would suggest shaving the fur in an inch radius of its anus. I would like to see the face of that bunny when you start :eek: -P.K. ---

I am concerned about your bunny’s health. I am assuming that you house him in a proper rabbit habitat, whereby the droppings fall through the wire into a pan below. If this is the case, no fecal matter should be left in the cage to attach itseld to your bunny. So, either your bunny cage is horrendously dirty (and it should be changed daily), or your bunny has soft stools, which could indicate illness or a problem with diet. Are you feeding your bunny lots of fresh vegetables and fruits? It could be you are giving too much. Do not under any circumstances give iceberg lettuce or pears, both of which can cause bloat and diarrhea, which is quickly fatal in rabbits. Are you giving clean, fresh water daily? It is not normal for a rabbit to soil itself, and my advice is to take him to a vet experienced in the care of rabbits. ---

Might be bacterial enteritis or lack of fiber. Feces attachment/caking problems can lead to lots nastier things. I would suggest you see a vet. ---

This mess is probably not feces, but clumping cecal discharge. My housebun gets this when his diet has too much carbohydrates. People food is not bunny food, and too much cecal discharge is cause to take bunny to the vet. My bun used to “find” cheerios after my daughter had breakfast, and they made him quite sick, with a substantial cecal discharge. I have a bunny, stays in his cage. What you feeding your bunny??? Bananas are the only fruit you can feed them that wont give them the runs. I saw a guy on tv say that. My bunny loves bananas., Drop one in front of him & he starts eating it like crazy. ---
