GAAH! I have to share this, but donā€™t have the magazine handy to provide actual referencesā€¦ I read an article in Reason magazine within the last year (the issue with a bright-yellow cover, I think) that quoted the Head-PETA-honchette as saying something to the effect of ā€œSix million Jews died in concentration camps, but this year alone over six BILLION broiler chickens will be killedā€. Eating a chicken is the moral equivalent of committing genocide? Am I being overly sensitive? Iā€™m not a PC-concious person, but this bugged even me. I knew the PETA people were insane, but I couldnā€™t believe she had the audacity to say that. I must go home and search for the article now. PLEASE, if some else saw that article, please put the actual quote up here. ---

It doesnā€™t _have_ to end up in the Pit. I think all sane people agree that the above quote (relating the Holocaust to killing chickens for dinner) is tasteless, ludicrous, and a disgrace. I donā€™t think this will turn into a debate either. I just think the OP wanted to share a story he found funny. It stays here for now. ---

I can just picture a new survival game show, where PETA, Sierra Club, Earth First, and otherlike-minded enviro-nazis are stranded on an island; PETA wouldnā€™t harm the fauna and the others wouldnā€™t touch the flora. They could protest and picket each other and the bets would be on when the cannibalism would startā€¦šŸ˜ƒ ---

Lessee, the PETA loonies arenā€™t an environmental group; theyā€™re an animal-rights group, in the same manner that National Right-to-Life is a fetal-rights group. Any effect that the policies of either would have on the environment is secondary. Earth First!, IIRC, decided early on that they werenā€™t even going to be an organization, so they donā€™t have any program _per se_. Detention for those little hoodlums! As repugnant as I consider Buchanan, Iā€™d give the guy the opportunity to speak. Heā€™s (reportedly) open to discussion, which is more than can be said for the PETA jerks. PETAā€™s style is confrontation. Too fucking bad if they catch a little blowback. Come on, itā€™s just PETA. Donā€™t fall for it. Most _animal-rights activists_ make fun of them, but even more hilarious are the people who go into conniptions about PETA, which is exactly what PETA is hoping will happen. If they really bother you, ignore them. Considering the number of PETA threads Iā€™ve seen since I got here, Iā€™d say theyā€™re doing a great job of problematizing animal rights issues because people _canā€™t_ ignore them. They donā€™t necessarily change your mind, but they make a talking point out of something that previously was a total non-issue. And if I was a kid, Iā€™d throw snowballs at anyone, anytime.
