_Do you remember this childhood joke?_ _Pete and Repeat went out in a boat. Pete fell in. Who was left? Repeat. Pete and Repeat when out in a boat. Pete fell in. Who was left?… I remember being so tickled with myself when I told that joke to adults._ The above is quoted, I looked it up. Was talking to Mom, and the subject of “repeats” on TV came up, and I remembered the joke, when I was 10 or so my older cousin told it to me. Had to look it up to remember the details. We both laughed at the silliness of it. But if there is a link on the web about the joke, I can’t be the only one who remembers it. ---

There’s a… kind of similar thing in Romanian. I’ll try to give an approximate translation: _One sunny morning, Cancer Case crossed the river. Soon afterwards, Tumor crossed the river too. How many of them crossed the river?_ Most people will answer two, but the “real” answer is three because Tumor should be interpreted as “two more”. There is a more similar one, where the protagonists are two fellows named If and Maybe, who really went out in a boat the result being a really confusing hypothetical situation, but I find it too hard to translate. ---

My cousins (about a decade younger than me) loved telling this to me back in the day. Over and over again. I would just say “repeat” each time. And then I finally told them, _“You do know you’re going to get tired out a lot sooner than I will, right?”_ ---

I remember the “patience, jackass, patience” joke from jr. high school in the mid-60’s. There was another joke ending with “That’s for suckers like you!” Anybody else remember that one? Don’t recall where I first heard this but my kids would watch a Shari Lewis video with this joke in it. For all I know I might have heard it on her TV show when I was a little kid. ---

I remember my first grade teacher trying to tell the class the Pete/Repeat joke. Except it wasn’t a boat, they were sitting on a fence. Either she wasn’t telling it right or we were all too young to understand, because when she’d say “Pete fell off, who was left?”, the whole class would answer “RE!” ---
