Peter Capaldi to leave Doctor Who

Update: I Really Do Like Good Liam! Politics be Fucked.

If you can pull it off, well then… Hadn’t You Better get Started???

As someone who has been through a mid-life crisis, I recognise the indicia.

Perhaps the concept is going through a mid-life crisis.

Tom Felton, anyone?

Yes!!!

I suspect you didn’t see Green Wing:

And there’s nothing wrong with being white or male or even both.

I completely agree … but somehow “the best person for the job” has always managed to be the White guy … which to some makes another White guy more “the best person for the job” because it is what The Doctor traditionally is and to some makes someone else more “the best person for the job” because it is what The Doctor traditionally is. Given the same level of talent and fun/interesting character created of course.

And, for the opposite of that…

Reminder: season starts on Saturday the 15[sup]th[/sup].

I don’t really care who the next Doctor is, but it would be nice to see him have a companion again who was something other than a young Earth woman.

Remember that nice bug lady the Master (in Derek Jacobi form) murdered? Someone like that would be good.

Mind you, the problem with alien companions is that the temptation for writers to pull out a “Oh my race is capable of [handy magic power] - sorry I’ve never mentioned this before and by the way I will never use this power again because of reasons” solution for the Problem Of The Week tends to be too strong to resist.

Time to turn it on its head and finally let the Doctor be a woman. We know that it’s possible canonically. One of the recent regenerations had the Doctor specifically checking for that. So why not? Young female Doctor, older gentleman companion? Or older female Doctor and younger male companion? Or (my favorite) older female Doctor, younger female companion?

The Doctor doesn’t have to be a dude.

If they really wanted to rile the masses, they’d make the new Doctor French.

How 'bout Hillary? I hear she’s looking for work.

I still think it will be Kris Marshall. He was mooted by the betting sites, then removed a few weeks later, but they don’t have any inside info. He just seems right for it, in my mind.

He left Death in Paradise mid-season which is probably what prompted the bookies’ interest, but that may mean nothing more than the show deciding his story was played out (which it was) and they were looking for a new [del]shark to jump[/del] direction to go in.

If they’re poaching cast from that show, they should have gone with Danny John-Jules. Way more fun.

Right, but I just think he’d be good because he has the right character for it. He has a Peter Davison/Sylvester McCoy way about him.

Though Danny John Jules would be an interesting approach.

If they go American, then I would like to see Jeff Goldblum as The Doctor.

Allons-y!

I apologize in advance for the late reply. The “best person for the job” is the one who will be able to keep the franchise alive. The producers/BBC may chose to go with a social experiment, or they may test market a short list of actors, or they may take a chance on the fans selection. (Personally, I wouldn’t want a Dr Who, or the companion(s), becoming the next Boaty McBoatface).

The big question, the revenue generating question, is whether the fans will accept a Dr Who and/or companion selected because it’s-the-right-thing-to-do, or seems politically correct? Are there people who are going to tune into Dr Who week after week only to support a PC choice when there are so many other choices demanding our attention?

Will any non-white-male chosen automatically be deemed a “PC choice” regardless of qualification?
