Pharmaceutical companies are holding back cures

You and I have had very different experiences then. I publish as routinely in industry as I did in academia, and I probably present data considerably more frequently. The only difference is that a lawyer does vet my slides for talks or my manuscripts in order to see if there is IP to file, but I’ve never been told I can’t present or had my presentation adjusted in any way. It’s been my experience that the scientists call the shots and I allow the lawyers to figure out a way for me to do what I want to do.

I dare say we do have very different experiences, because we’re working in different parts of the industry and perhaps talking about different aspects of drug development.

I deal with clinical trial plans (as well as CSRs), which of course have to be submitted to various reviewer agencies, but are nevertheless confidential in the planning stage.
I used to translate executive meeting minutes that contained information regarding early seed compound investments and go/no-go decisions on candidate drug compounds, which is also highly classified information.
The company has a vested interest in not showing their hand too much to their rivals.

But as you point out, the drug companies and investigators involved will freely publish the results of clinical studies. So I agree, it’s not really such an industry of shadows and secrecy.
Also, there is now a great deal of transparency regarding financial connections between drug manufactures and medical institutions.

Couldn’t we just use orphans or Chinese prisoners and not register them? We would know our cancer cure works and since we’re not going to sell it anyway, we wouldn’t have the guvment regulatory agencies involved.

I blame Robin Cook. He’s should write a book about this; wait, he probably already has.

The conspiracy theory presumably requires that the pharmaceutical companies stumble upon it accidentally. After all, if they’re going to suppress it, why would they deliberately spend all those resources researching the cure? Just to be extra evil, sitting on a cure and laughing while people die of cancer?

So if it was discovered accidentally, it would have to be in the process of trying to develop a treatment or other drug which is less effective than a cure that you plan on selling to people. But then that obviously has the problem of being part of the public record and regulated.

Well, duh! So they could prevent other companies from being able to pursue development of it!

Wait, that requires a public patent.

Or it could have been developed by some rogue researcher doing his work for the good of mankind, but robbed of his research and given amnesia by BigPharma’s drug enhanced goons.

It doesn’t have to have entered clinical trials, because in conspiracy land you can allways tell that something is the cure by how it’s a compound in something an aunt of a friend of yours ate to cure her cancer. And …

Hm, trying to use logic to create a conspiracy scenario has broken my brain.

Absolutely. Preach it brother! It’s like the Big Oil/Big Auto holding out on 200 MPG carburetors. They have had this technology since the 40’s and they are sitting on it in order to squeeze profits out of us. And those little green pills that can turn water into gasoline for pennies on the dollar!

Plus, what’s up with fusion? You know that if they can fake putting men on the moon they can certainly build Mr. Fusion thingies to put in your car or laptop! Man, it just makes me so mad how these companies hold out on us! <— mad face

:stuck_out_tongue:

There are no secret cures out there. If there were then the relatives of pharmaceutical companies would not be dying of AIDS, cancer, etc. You can make a lot of money on the cure to any disease, you just have to charge enough. How much would you pay to be cured of AIDS or cancer?

Never understimate the evil of Big Pharma.

Besides, however much they spend finding a cure, that $$ is dwarfed by the $$$$$$ they get for poisoning people with CHEMO (remember, there are no targeted drugs or immunotherapy for cancer, just CHEMO). And while vast sums are spent paying bloggers and posters (such as the many Dopers on the Pharma payroll, you know who you are) to run down natural cures on Internet message boards and in comments sections of news articles, Filthy Pharma Lucre is sufficient to cover those expenses thousands of times over.

But mainly it’s pure Evil. It started with Morris Fishbein, and it’ll never stop unless the sheeple WAKE UP!!!

And you haven’t even gotten into chemtrails yet. You KNOW that it’s Big Pharma and The Government(tm…arr) behind that. They use the chemtrails to get people sick, then along comes Big Pharma to give them ‘cures’ for the stuff…but only curing them a little bit to keep them on the hook. It’s a vicious square of evilness…possibly a vicious cube or even pentagram.

Ah, yes, big pharma pays out the entire skeptical movement to keep us debunking those natural cures. Makes me wonder - what does it cost to get people to shill for big pharma, defending them against conspiracy theories and defending against the natural cures? Since at the very least thousands of people go about doing this sort of activism/blogging/what have you, and none of them have ever come forward about being secretly on the big pharma payroll, they must pay really well to buy that silence.

So what is that, at least a few billion a year in secret skeptic funds that stays off the books somehow?

Yeah, but weapons companies tend to get paid by government contracts. And the military tends to want to start using their cool new weapons ASAP.
I wonder where one draws the lines between “crazy conspiracy”, “unethical or illegal business practices” and “incompetence”?

For example:
Selling mortgages to people who cannot afford them and then packaging them up as AAA rated securities is unethical (possibly illegal).

Purchasing those securities in vast quantities without performing appropriate due diligence is incompetence.

Believing that the mortgage crisis was a complex scheme orchestrated by the Illuminati to siphon wealth from the middle class and keep them impoverished is crazy conspiracy.

It’s all there if you try. Watch:

The conspiracy goes deeper than you know. What is the only thing that has stopped chemtrails in the last 15 years? 9/11. All the flights in the US were grounded. Who was behind 9/11? Osama bin Laden, you say? He was George Bush’s patsy and manipulated into the attack, because Big Oil (who are really alien Greys) is at war with Big Pharma (reverse Crab People) for New World Order domination. Big Oil benefits from the Iraq War while temporarily halting the chemtrails in a two-pronged bid for supremacy. Diabolical, I tells ya.

It’s all there if you would just open your eyes.

If you rearrange the letters “Barack Obama”, you get “A Crab amok!” (with a leftover “b” and “a”).

Better yet, I found this anagram for “President Barack Obama” on the interwebs, so it must be true:

AKA Iran’s Carpet-bombed

He’s in on it, too. We know he’s a sneaky bastard who only got elected to steal the Hope Diamond with his republican allies. [Cough] McCain [/Cough].

msmith537, I noticed you posted about weapons contracts, but even I’m too afraid to mention their involvement, since Big Weapons ™ profits from both sides of the NWO war and Iran is a customer for nukes–and I have it on good authority that Iranian agents have been recording the show Manhattan.

Excuse me, there’s someone knocking on my door…

The thing is, in order to hide The Cure for Cancer™, Big Pharma would have to sink all sorts of money into locating a cure and proving it works.

Then they are supposed to walk away from that in order to peddle non-curative treatments? Most of which a patient does not take for an extended healthy lifetime but rather for a few weeks or months!?

Pharmacoeconomics, my friend.

See, for some reason, CT’ers think the BigPharma doesn’t want to make money on a "cancer cure (TM, with acknowledgement) and is threatened by “alternative” cures.

But there’s more than BigPharma, i.e., a lot of start-ups (say, spun out of academic research) are looking at making money on possible “cancer” cures by being bought by "BigPharma.

Off the top-of-my-head, one of the most common “defects” in cancer is a mutation in the tumor suppressor p53. Defects (or mutations) in p53 allow inappropriate cell division to occur in a majority of “cancers”.

The guy that figures out how to use CISPR or some other gene editing technique to “fix” p53 in “cancer”; that guy wins the Nobel Prize.

The real reason BigPharma is keeping back cures is that they also own BigAlternative. And BigAlternative has the most insane ROI in the world. Zero research (by the producers themselves), no worry about ingredients, since they don’t do anything anyway, and the sheep will do all your advertising for you.

It’s funny that you mention that. Somewhere around 75% of the alternative treatments you find in a pharmacy are made by the big pharmacy companies. And they know its shit, but there’s a market anyway. So ironically the actual dickish behavior on the part the drug companies is the kind that’s blindly praised by the idiots who think they’re railing against them.

I wish everyone who demonizes big pharma and then buys their bullshit homeopathic cures knew this so that there’d require an alternative head explosion cure.

Just since it’s the StraightDope (and not that I don’t believe you); but cite.
