We once had a poster **hiryuu** who, like Pythagoras on 'ludes, found the Secret of Life and the Universe in _phi_, apparently the value of the Golden Mean. His attempts to “prove” his hypothesis were tantalizingly close to comprehensible, though evidently by no means anywhere near convincing if they had been comprehensible. 🙂 Perusing parts of Christian Forums (which does have a fair number of eminently sane people, including a few from here – notably **lel** , whom I think has a deal with the Internet domain providers for a membership on any bulletin board/message board they license! 😉 – and **Dr Lao** ), I spotted someone with the same inclination, and linked, putting it in the Pit as remarks on numerological bizarreries deserve opportunity to be ranted at. I don’t get why people are firmly convinced that any religion requires believing three impossible things before breakfast – but seeing stuff like this begins to give me an idea of the sort of perspective that “those crazy ideas” engender in others. ---

Phi is called the golden ratio as it was believed to literally be the ‘divine proportion’ in the 16th century and ever since there have always been people trying to attach mystical significance to it. So at least they have a good pedigree. ---

Firstly, this reaffirms my belief that you should have to have a license to shown you’ve passed a basic test in thinking before you’re allowed to talk crap about irrational numbers. Secondly, while I agree many religious people think a lot of nonsense about numbers and God, there unfortunately are athiesitic numerlogists. Third, there’s enough really amazing facts about irrational numbers without making any up! ---
