Philosophical Poll: your REASONS for your stance on Free Will

Total agreement.

Also, the poll options didn’t seem to work for me. None of the options really describes my stance.

Your post describes my stance – may I say it? – to a “T”!

Whoa, that’s deep.

Did anyone else read this as “Free WiFi”?

I believe in free will, because it’s a logical continuation of the evolution of the universe:

Matter came out of nothingness.
Life came into being out of cold, dead matter.
Consciousness came to be, out of life.
Free will came to be, out of consciousness.

I believe that, barring extreme circumstances, we are responsible for the content of our minds. IOW, if you are capable of believing something, you are just as capable of not believing it. We are not mere robots, passively absorbing content from society or our environment or our DNA. Admittedly, there are some things that seem to be built-in, but not as many as people think.

I understand the issues surrounding “criminal justice,” but unlike the OP, it’s a very marginal issue.

I don’t know if I find that convincing.

After all, people believe all kinds of things retroactively. Like the good old sour grapes syndrome - “I didn’t want that anyway.” Or how about after you break up with someone: two months ago, the way they did X was so cute, and now it’s your reason you’re so glad to never see them again.

Or even the use of logic. For most people, the emotional centers of the brain fire up first. Only after deciding how they feel about the issue do they fire up the logic centers to come up with a justification. They’re not even aware that this is what they’re doing.

I’m not saying we don’t have free will, but I definitely think the brain is capable of lying to itself about virtually anything it wants to.

Definitely! (This is the major thrust of my posts in the other thread.) Free will is definitely limited. That’s why dieting is hard, and candy bars are tempting, and why we sometimes lose our temper and say nasty things to people we love. We certainly do not have absolute Free Will!

I believe in free will because the voices in my head say I can do what I want.

After time to ponder this I believe that the criminal justice system came about because of our use of free will to attempt to punish others for their deeds. Basically the criminal justice system came about because we ‘misused’ free will because we have the power but have never been given the authority to punish another person (morally). We have only have been given the authority to discipline (correct).

The crime itself is not a function of free will (it is a result of worldly influence), the desire and emotion to ‘get even’ or to ‘punish’ the person is a function of free will. If that path is chosen it will be allowed and/but have it’s societal and karmic consequences for that free will decision to help the fellow person who obviously needs it but the choice was made to punish.
