There is, I’ve noticed, a tendency for all English speakers (including me) to regard their own dialect, pronunciation, spelling and vocabulary as flawless and self- consistent, and to judge other examples as incorrect or inconsistent or wrong. Reality: English is a mess. Every version of it is a mess. My dialect is a mess. Your dialect is a mess. None of this is your fault or my fault - it was a mess before we arrived on scene and there is no way to fix it now without breaking it. We’re just unaware of how messy it is because we’re used to it. ---

“Salient” is suddenly…salient. I find myself using it, and hate myself for it. Its not inherently terrible, but it will go down in history as so 2022. The podcasters at FiveThirtyEight were taking bets on how long they could go without saying it, and it wasn’t long. ---

Synergy is still big? That’s such a late 90s/early 00s corporate speak word; I remember we made fun of it back in 1999 at the business paper I used to work at. I thought it would have run its course by now – I don’t hear it very often, but I don’t run in corporate circles anymore. It’s too bad, because “synergy” actually is a nifty word. ---

They’re using “salient” to mean “a propos,” “relevant,” “important now,” “happening,” “actively connected to the thing we’ve been talking about.” ---

Saw another use of “holistic” today to describe a women’s medical clinic that relies heavily on woo. I’m bewildered though that the clinic considers Botox injections and laser hair removal to be “holistic”. ---
