Everyone, every where is aware of and affected by Covid on some level. I am quite sick of hearing the phrase, ‘these trying times…’ everywhere from popsicle commercials to parent teacher conferences. ‘Moving forward’ ‘Facetious’ does not mean the same thing as ‘sarcastic’. ---

I use it myself sometimes, just as a synonym for “people” that is sometimes a subtly better fit. There’s not necessarily any “faux-folksiness” about it. Likewise “townsfolk” is a perfectly fine word (though “townspeople” is indeed used more often). ---

It was a source of unintended and considerable amusement when he used it in his first speech before the UN General Assembly. (Replace “greatest” with “worst” for anything Obama did that he claims to have fixed.) ---

I’m guilty of a number of these 🙂. For example I say to be honest or frankly a lot. It’s completely unconscious so I’ve had a hard time breaking myself of the habit, even though it does very mildly irk a couple of friends of mine. My current aggravation is [right here in this thread title](https://boards.straightdope.com/t/jerry-falwell-is-a-cuck-and-was-blackmailed-into-supporting-trump/918898). My problem is that logical or not I’ve internalized the use of the archaic word cuck as being 100% owned by shitty-ass incels. I’m pretty sure that is not the intention of that OP, but it still irrationally annoys me every time I see that thread pop back up. Because I associate any use of it with shitty-ass incels. I sorta wish people that either just use the entire word cuckold, old fashioned though it is or just avoid using the term altogether. I think it is kinda of a pathetic insult anyway, implying that a man is somehow lesser or weak because his partner is cheating on him. It hearkens back to old toxic concepts of masculinity. But mostly because it reminds me of shitheel incels and MRA whackadoos. ---

I worked in a factory where the big boss would regularly shut down the whole plant and gather everyone in the breakroom for impromptu meetings. They were never of any import. Anyway, he would say “and so on and so forth” so often that at one meeting I took pen and paper and made a hashmark for every time he said it. Coworkers glanced over surreptitiously to see the score, but even though I was just making hashmarks, he said it so often that I lost track. ---
