They do SOMETIMES hit the ball on the barrel. Eliminating it would drop their batting averages to .150. Losing all that mass wouldn’t help either.

The tapered end would make a significant difference in the location of the center of mass. This would have the same effect as a lighter bat as far as speed goes.
