Just saw Pirates of the Caribbean this weekend (a dollar short and a day late, as usual). Damn fine movie! I can’t say enough good things about it, but most of them have already been said, anyway. Johnny Depp was perfect and hilarious as CAPTAIN Jack Sparrow; the others were grand as well, but it was pretty clear who was running the show.

I loved the enormously long list of crimes that is read when Jack’s to be executed. Bigamy’s in there, which may explain why he kept getting slapped by women…

[spoiler]So, what was Jack doing those ten years since the mutiny? He must have kept a low profile if the Black Pearl crew didn’t know he had gotten off the island. But Gibbs had. Maybe he was in indentured service to the rum runners. I mean, what did he have to barter with on that island, anyway?

I also figured out how the curse works; I didn’t catch this the first time. Everyone who stole from the chest had to drop some blood onto it, not just Turner. That’s why Jack cut his palm at the end, too. I guess all the other pirates must have given a little at some point as well.[/spoiler]

I liked the movie a lot. Depp pretty much saved it, and I’d give him an oscar for his performance. Great script, but two major weaknesses. Bloom just stands around looking pretty, and that broad who played the daughter kind of sucked.

Why would Bloom or Depp have any interest in taking her?

I have seen it twice already, so ya I liked it. And since the ride has been on of my favorites I was glad they worked in a lot of the ride into the movie with out making it too silly.

I was happy with the end and glad Will and Elizabeth did not go with Jack as I thought they were going to do. Why you ask? As much as Jack was the Hero in the movie he was no more a good guy then the crew that marooned him. In the end he is a pirate and I can’t see the two of them being too happy the first time they send some merchants ship to the bottom of the sea or sack some random port just for bounty. As cool as Jack is, he’s still a pirate and that means everything that goes along with that label. I just can’t see the two of them doing all that.

Not to mention they gross disregard of the code. 🙂

I think we can end all the spoiler boxes now. Anyone 4 pages into this thread has most likely seen the movie. What say you, OP?

Still, to be safe:

When reading Jack Sparrow’s, I mean, Captain Jack Sparrow’s crimes at the end, I laughed out loud when they said “Impersonating a cleric of the Church.” I was the only one laughing. Then, they quickly cut to a close up of Depp and he says, “Heh heh, I was [some Sparrowish rambling]” while making the animatronic gestures and smiling real silly like… it was as though the on screen character was reacting to my laugh. Got the whole theatre laughing at that. 🙂

One really minor nit: When Captain Jack was interviewing the new crew he had just recruited from the fun place, one man doesn’t answer him. They inform Sparrow that the man is a mute [cut to Depp sticking out his tongue] and ansewrs through the parrot he had taught to speak for him. Huh? How did he teach the parrot to speak if his tongue was cut out? There is no indication in the lines that he taught the parrot _before_ the tongue taking. In fact, I think it the crew master said something like, “He had his tongue cut [cut to Depp sticking out his tongue], so he taught this buccin’ parrot to talk for him.”
[Captain Jack Sparrow stagger] Wha…? [/CJSs]

Oh yeah, I liked it. Liked it a lot.

Stoopid hamsters ate my post. Make those scallawags walk the bleedin plank!

I finally went to see PotC this weekend, and (as so many other people have said) it TOTALLY ROCKED! It was such a wonderful adventure film, the best summer fun movie I’ve seen in a few years.

I loved all the connections to the Disney ride, and roared at the prison scene when they were trying to lure the dog with the keys. I also caught another Disney in-joke that nobody’s mentioned yet:

> [@](#):
>
> (Scene: Cap. Barbarossa’s cabin, set for dinner.)
> Barbarossa: Apple? (Offers a green delicious.)
> Elizabeth: (Stops, stares.) It’s poisoned!

Also, I’d love to see a follow-on movie, with Will, Elizabeth, and Captain Jack in a new adventure. We don’t need the Commodore as a major plot element; I’m hoping for a new story, not a true sequel.

Also, to address **NoClueBoy** ’s nitpick:

Just after Drunk With Pigs pirate talks about No Tongue having taught his parrot to speak for him, he says _sotto voce_: “We never did figure that one out.”

That’s how you know it’s good - It takes a special movie to live through a stump waggling scene…

I figured Jack adopted his mannerisms and generally loopy demeanor to confuse others and trick them into underestimating. He can be quite nimble and quick when he needs to be.

Well, for one thing, she _is_ very hot. And a very hot looking white woman in 17th or 18th Century Carribean was probably a very rare commodity. My tastes would be more toward the brown-skinned woman that Cpt. Sparrow owed a boat to, but the era & sensibilities of englishmen, etc etc.

Seriously, I happen to agree that she was a welcome break from the typical Disney movie heroine; she does a lot more than just get herself into trouble, scream and fall down. Like the story she made up about being Elizabeth _Turner_.

A pirate zombie monkey is like a comedy trifecta. If they’d only found some way to make him a ninja, it would’ve been a grand slam of hilarity. He better figure in the sequel.

Okay, so I’ve seen this movie once all the way through and bits and pieces of it several more times (I work at a movie theater, got nothing better to do on break. 🙂 ) And I just loooove this movie! It has to be the best I’ve seen this summer, (seen lots of movies this summer, the whole working-at-the-movie-theater bit, yanno) just ahead of Finding Nemo. This movie is just all around fun, and romantic and amusing and adventure-y. It really does have something for everyone. And hey, it’s got Orlando Bloom. ::drool::

But, as everyone else has said, Johnny Depp absolutely owns this movie, and is somehow, strangely, incredibly sexy, with his swishy-drunken pirate mannerisms and attitude. And the pirate talk.

One of my favorite lines: “And I can’t bring this ship into Tortuga all by me onesies. Savvy?” Just… I dunno, so awesome.

One bit that I loved though, that nobody else mentioned, but I noticed both times that I saw this part of the movie… (spoiler box dispensed with on the theory that anyone on page 4 of the thread has either seen the movie or doesn’t care)

When the pirate crew of the Interceptor are trying to outrun the Pearl and they do the drop-the-starboard-anchor maneuver, it cuts to the Pearl, where we see the monkey, then pans up to Barbossa, who pulls out his spyglass to see what exactly the Interceptor’s doing. The look on the monkey’s face is almost identical to that on Geoffrey Rush’s, this squinty-eyed, “What the bloody blazes are they doing?” look. It’s hilarious. The monkey looks so confused!

Okay, I’m a dork, but I loved it. Grrrreat movie.

No, for that he’d have to be a _robot_ ninja.

A zombie pirate robot ninja monkey. What could be more perfect?

Don’t know how you’d get “zombie” and “robot” in the same character. Maybe he’s a cyborg-type dealie, and the living tissue part is undead?
