He was a cancer surviving man who ran half way across an enormous country, with only one leg, to raise money for cancer research. Failing to reach his goal because he lost his life to the disease.

If you asked someone “What should I see in your fair city?” and they responded:
“Terry Fox was a man who was going to run across an enormous country who failed to reach his goal so let’s build him a statue and that’s what you should go see.” You wouldn’t think that was funny? Hilarious even? I do. Maybe I’ve got a very fucking sick and assholish funny bone to think a small po-dunk town like Thunder Bay would cling to a person who set a goal to run across a country and didn’t make it.
Of course, once I knew that he didn’t make it because of cancer, that he did it on one leg because of cancer, and that he was doing it to raise money for cancer, then it wasn’t funny. It was just a story completely taken out of context.

I remember vacationing on Minnesota’s north shore and my SO and I decided to drive up to Thunder Bay, ON for the day. We asked around about what we should see in their fine town and was directed to a statue of Terry Fox. (Which, incidentally, has a beautiful view of Lake Superior). The person told us the story about how this man planned to run from one side of Canada all the way to the other side, but stopped midway in Thunder Bay.
We thanked the man for that and got in the car and laughed that only Canada would celebrate an achievement that wasn’t even achieved.
Fuck you.

I wonder who’s got more balls. A kid who runs a marathon (26 miles) a day, day after consecutive day after day, for over 2000 miles, on one leg mind you, and is FORCED to stop only because his lungs are filling with fucking cancer OR an anonymous asshole from Minnesota who doesn’t know how to apologize (although that’s OK because no one knows his real name).
And you know, even if you _thought_ he ‘quit’ or couldn’t finish what he started, it speaks volumes about you that you simply _assumed_ the whole thing was laughable (cause, after all, that’s why people erect statues to kids).
You are an embarrassment not only to your countrymen but to humanity itself. Take faith, though. By the time you’re sixteen, you might be mature enough to man up and look to real heroes like Terry Fox for inspiration.

The achievement and the celebration is for the fact that he made it as far as he did, and to his noble effort.
Probably comparable to sections of a certain country erecting statues and naming parks, streets, schools, etc. after the men who _lost_ a civil war.
