> Hey, dumb fuck, read the thread and _then_ post.

Oh, my bad. Did I miss Trepa’s post that said “Heh. Sorry, guys. This is embarrassing. I misunderstood analogies completely. I forgot that A and C don’t have any relationship to each other in analogies. I realize I’m an idiot and won’t post anymore in this thread.”

Oh, that never happened? Then shut the fuck up.

> [@Onomatopoeia](#):
>
> I’m sorry, Chessic, your analogy doesn’t hold in this case, especially in light of Mr. Williams admitting that he was comparing Obama to Hitler.

So you think these two sentences are accurate and make sense?

> [@Trepa\_Mayfield](#):
>
> First of all, he is comparing Boehner and Obama to Netayahu and Hitler. The obvious implication is that he is comparing Boehner to Netayahu and Obama to Hitler.

…despite that being the exact opposite of how analogies are used? If he’d said “Obama:Hitler::Netanyaho:Moses”, you’d/Trepa’d have a point. But he didn’t. Obama and Hitler were on opposite sides of the analogy. Question: Do you think men are like bicycles? Why or why not?

This is a truism worth noting. It’s wider than the SDMB. If a comment under a news article has ‘common sense’ or ‘reason’ or ‘truth’ in the moniker, the likelihood of their spewing knee-jerk specious reasoning goes up substantially. If they, through avatar or misattributed quote or the like, invoke a founding father, the probability is close to 100%.

> Oh, wait. That’s not how analogies work. Analogies compare one relationship to another, but it doesn’t compare the objects mentioned. “A is to B as C is to D” says nothing about how A and C are related, nor about B and D’s relationship. This is, like, the first thing they teach you about analogies when you’re 8. Even grade school students know this. You must have been absent that day.
>
> Obama:Boehner::Hitler:Netanyaho in no way implies that Obama and Hitler are alike. Unless, of course, you don’t understand how analogies work. But hey, your failed attempt to understand the easily understandable is admirable, too.

It’s fine if you want to credit a high school drop out with a decades-long history of drug and alcohol abuse with grokking the nuances of analogies, but a billion+ dollar corporation decided to wash its hands of him due to his ham-fisted comments, which trumps your defense. Maybe Williams can record a howl for your answering machine so you don’t feel deprived of his either talent or political acumen.

I wonder if you’d offer a similarly generous analysis of Dixie Chicks star Natalie Maines’ anti-war comments during the Bush administration.

Frequently so, no doubt, unless that username modestly invokes clarity and simplicity.

So… the singer who recorded _If the South Woulda Won_ says something that was probably offensive\*, and people are surprised? :dubious:

\*Like **Scylla** , I have no idea what he was trying to say, so I’m giving him the benefit of the doubt WRT whether he was actually calling Obama Hitler.

My username has nothing to do with reason or common sense. In fact, it’s the opposite.

It’s not a nuance. It’s the whole fucking concept. And high school drop out or not, I’m of the understanding that Mr. Williams can speak the English language. It’s not his fault that liberals only heard “Obama…Hitler…” and ignored the words in between or somehow decided to ignore what they learned in third grade.

And show me the analogy that Maines made that you’re referring to. I’m unfamiliar with it.
I’ll just repeat what **Sigmagirl** said:

Whose fault is it that you didn’t hear the part right after it?

Yeah, good thing he didn’t say he was ashamed the president was from his home state, because that would be, you know, crossing the line.

I call bullshit on this notion that “Netanyaho:Hitler” was suppose to convey nothing more than polar opposites.

Point to me one instance in the past 50 years where Hitler hasn’t been held up as the paragon of evil. The absolute worstest or the worstest thing there is.

There are a million ferinstances he could have glommed onto to convey polar opposition:

It’s like Cats and Dogs golfing together.
It’s like Red Sox and Yankees golfing togetehr.
It’s like Tastes Great and Less Filling golfing together.

I wonder why, for one of his polar opposites, he conveniently latched onto the one buzz-word, so buzz-wordy that it has it’s own place in debate lore. Paging Mr. Godwin.

You expect me to believe this fucking hick wasn’t intending to conflate Hitler with Obama? That dawg won’t hunt.

Second, yes, he says “they are enemies”, and then clarifies, “Obama! And Biden! Are you kidding? The Three Stooges.”. Clearly he means Obama and Biden are the enemies (to America), not your idea that Obama and Boehner are enemies to each other. This makes the Obama/Hitler comparison even more clear. Thirdly, he defends his analogy by referring to “the shape the country’s in”. That would make sense if he thought Obama was comparable to Hitler. It wouldn’t make sense if he thought that the debate in congress was too heated; in that case, it would make sense for him to say ‘the state the **government’s** in’.

This is what happens when you have too much air time and not enough content. You end up interviewing random B-list celebrities and most have as much business discussing politics as I have getting up on stage and playing a guitar.

What’s your point? Is Netanyahu a deaf-mute or something?

If you idly hear the phrase, “He’s worse than Hitler,” do you assume the speaker is saying the subject of their ire is an evil motherfucker of some stripe, or that he doesn’t speak well in public?
