> That’s a classical non-apology apology, IMHO. The “if” in the phrase “I’m very sorry if it offended anyone” makes it weaselly - he knows it was offensive, because he meant it to be offensive. Replacing the “if” with the word “that” would make it worlds better, and a real apology.

Agreed- the (non)apology is an admission of guilt. I doubt this hayseed’s comments have little if any effect on public opinion, but ESPN’s decision to cut him was a good business decision IMHO. He’s bound to stick the other foot in sooner or later.

I believe it used to be the custom that a Hank Jr. was a Jr. until the Sr. passed on, and then was just Hank.

Hank Junior’s real name is Randal Hank Williams. He presumably adopted his dad’s name to sell more records.

His mama did it. Audrey was a piece of work…

As pointed out, he isn’t really a Junior. But Hank Williams will remain a legend long after his son has become a minor footnote in music history.

His own son is Shelton Hank Williams who goes by Hank 3.

Hank Sr.'s birth name was Hiram King Williams (a Masonic reference). Hank was a nickname.

The entire family epitomizes “dysfunctional rednecks with money” like no other multigenerational grouping. From Hank Sr. (an undeniably if not incomparably brilliant singer and songwriter) and Audrey to Bocephus and his groupings to Hank 3 (who trashes his own father for being mostly absentee parent AND his ex-girlfriend for being selfish enough to expect him to pay a few years of back child support) they’re just tore up with trashiness. If one of their women were to breed with Ted Nugent a vortex of trashiness might open that would engulf several states.

Their sound is okay imo, it all depends on how much you like rockabilly or hellbilly.
In fairness, Hitler’s cover of [The Jeffersons Theme](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J3YRWhg4YaA) could hold its own against any musician.

In the sense that sticking your fingers in your ears and going “na na na na na I can’t hear you” is responding.

The right side of the Atlantic.
And, yes it is certainly an American custom. Not certain if it is purely US, but it is definitely American. Most people over here would probably think it’s as weird to give your own name to your kid than it is to give a human name to a dog.

Yes. it should be Hank the 2nd and Hank the 3rd.

Odd comment, that, considering the royal preference for repetitious appellation.

You’re in the UK, right? My father has his father’s name, and I have that name as my middle name. I’ve never heard anyone say it’s weird.

Maybe it’s just a pet peeve of mine, but I just find it awfully weird. Like considering your kid as a clone.

Maybe a pond and couple-three hundred years between our people and yours, but we likely picked up the habit from royal tradition. If we have to take credit for the Hanks, you must accept full responsibility for your weird customs: [Timeline of English Monarchs](http://www.history-timelines.org.uk/people-timelines/31-timeline-of-english-monarchs.htm)

I’m not saying it isn’t weird. I’m saying it isn’t American; it didn’t start in America nor is it the only place the tradition continues.
