Why anyone [on a message board dedicated to fighting ignorance](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/) would take anything said by a [mind reading](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showpost.php?p=16993271&postcount=698) [fortune teller](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showpost.php?p=16992525&postcount=677) with an obviosly extremist agenda as gospel truth is beyond me.

This is a totally idiotic argument. Your constant repetition of it does nothing to make it less so. Courts everywhere have repeatedly ruled that laws that are idiotic and totally counterproductive, can nevertheless still be constitutional. Your repeated assertion of this still fails miserably in demonstrating that such a law will actually do anything worthwhile.

Yeah, because it’s not like I didn’t post at least 10 times that at the time of that incident **they weren’t MY dogs** and I was using their then-current owner’s ill-suited equipment.

Now that they _are_ my dogs, they are on [**Gentle Leader harnesses**](http://www.amazon.com/Gentle-Leader-Quick-Release-Collar/dp/B0009X49KU%3FSubscriptionId%3DAKIAILSHYYTFIVPWUY6Q%26tag%3Dduckduckgo-d-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3DB0009X49KU) and never get anywhere further than the length of my arm away from me, since I’m stronger than both of their **faces** put together.

That’s what **responsible** pet **owners** do: Get the right equipment so they _can_ keep their dogs under their control 100% of the time.

Unlike our friend who has admitted he has allowed his schnauzer to get free from his grip **several times**.

Only had to happen to me once, and I fixed the fucking problem. What’s his excuse?

But again, way to miss the actual point of the story.

Idiot.

The Akita did not require police to shoot it 3 times point blank. It stopped on its own.

The child left the hospital after getting stitches. The child did not require a medivac helicopter ride. Not life threatening injuries.

Lets make this real simple. Its a new year - 2014. Lets track the following (USA only) :

1.) Fatal canines attacks on humans
2.) Canine attacks on humans resulting in loss of limb (arm or leg, or any combination)
3.) Canine attacks on humans that only stopped when shot by police
4.) " " " " " " " " " " relatives or bystanders.
5.) Fatal canine mauling of large livestock: Horses, Llamas, Cows, Tyrannosaurus Rex, Pterodactyls, etc…
6.) Fatal or amputation mauling of animal rescue employees / owners.
7.) Canine mauling that require medivac helicopters
Dogs bitings that result in stitches, pit bull or not, will not be tracked, if it didn’t require a police action shooting. They are literally in the tens of thousands. Fatals average 30, amputations and large livestock, less than a hundred. Police shootings - 90% exclusive to pit bulls - are weekly events.

These are what insurance companies pay the most for (I.E, the record $7 million award in Rusk County Texas, that had its 2nd fatal child mauling by pit bulls in less than a year - despite having both the welcome signs on the same pole - and more fatals than Miami and Denver had combined in the past 2 decades of their ban on pit bulls, by all breeds combined).
So far we have one confirmed kill by a pit bull in Houston.
We have one helicopter medivac ride for the 8 year old girl that’s now in a Johnson City, TN hospital. Her mothers pit bull latched onto her head as her mother held her in her arms.

In that same Johnson City TN hospital, we have the pit bull owner with life threatening injuries, by her own loved pit bull, that mauled her in her home, the chased her outside, continuing the mauling, until the police shot it 3 times, killing it.

1 fatal by pit bull
1 Medivac copter ride due to family pit bull
1 police action shooting to save a life of nutter / owner

All three involved pit bulls.

I will post the 2013 total for the above categories shortly.

The only thing I see that was ill-suited was you. If you couldn’t control them with the equipment you had you shouldn’t have been out with them. The fault is 100% yours and your dogs.

**Responsible** owners get that equipment before their shitty little dogs attack something.

No, I didn’t miss the point. You were trying to show that there were triggers that cause dogs to attack. That is exactly why owners need to be in control of their pets at all times. You utterly failed at that and the result was an injured animal. But hey good job proving that it is actually bad owners and not the breed that is the problem kudos on being a statistic.

Bullshit

It doesn’t matter who owned them, similar to driving a car. YOU WERE RESPONSIBLE.

You link to a new harness. The harness isn’t what failed. You said the rope almost burned your hands and both pit bulls charged the man and his dog. Neither the rope, nor the harness, failed. Root cause was deemed to be the loose nut at the other end of the rope. The loose nutter, that is.

Getting a new harness will do nothing to harness the fact the pit bulls, while less than 6% of the canine population, year after year, range from 65% to 85% of all fatals. And 90% of all fatal large livestock maulings. Similar for amputations and helicopter medivac rides. Similar for police action shootings (otherwise, as in the case in Johnson City, that total would be significantly higher for fatals / amputations or both.

Google these 4 words: pit bull pulling car

Look at all the videos of a single pit bull pulling a car, then explain how you can hold 2 pit bulls, even given the assumption you could go bear hunting with a stick.

You are still blaming that man for letting go of his leashed dog AFTER your 2 pit bulls escaped from your leashes.

You just don’t get it. The good news, you are in good company. You are a nutter. Wear the title proudly.

Will you adjust them accordingly every time you move the goal posts?

Why should we agree to that list of arbitrary standards you pulled out of your ass? I especially like the dogs being shot part as if it’s the dogs fault when the authorities don’t have proper equipment to restrain an animal.

I can show you videos of men pulling busses. Does that mean it’s impossible to restrain those guys?

**Shayna** , I’ve read **Stoid** ’s link and plenty others, both for and against PBs. That said, I’m afraid the verdict is in – Pitbulls (and mixes of) are undoubtedly the most dangerous breed (or mix if you prefer) of dog out there.

Numbers are in – and have been for quite some time – and there’s no denying that both, the breed has degenerated into a (mostly) dangerous and unpredictable one. Now, I’ll be the first to say that breed degeneration has affected tens of breeds – one only take a look at what they’ve done to the original GS to what it has become today. A sad case of great dog bred into “aesthetic standards” that not only have disfigured the breed but brought on any number of illnesses – hip dysplasia being number one. And so it goes for many other breeds.

Here is one of many articles detailing the process: [**How a century of breeding ‘improvement’ has turned once-healthy dogs into deformed animals**](http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2519314/How-century-breeding-improvement-turned-healthy-dogs-deformed-animals.html) – a simple search will find you many more, videos included.

What I am getting at is simply the fact that Pitbulls were originally raised – as their name suggests – to be very tough, gamey dogs, whose original job was to simply engage Bulls in a ring and/or range. But by the same token, they also had a very strong bond to their owners & family. Unfortunately, as in many of the other cases mentioned, that last part has been “bred-out” of many a Pit simply because dog-fighting has become big-business: [**Dogfighting a booming business, experts say**](http://edition.cnn.com/2007/US/07/18/dog.fighting/)

So yes, I can certainly believe that many a Pit is exactly as yours describe – but, OTOH, facts are facts, and one of them is that today’s Pitbulls’ are, by far, the most dangerous canine known to man. Would I ban the breed? Tough question. But if things don’t change, why yes, yes I would. For very few owners bother (as with most dogs) to find out their pedigree – and again, as things stand today, you are just as likely to get/adopt a lethal dog than you are a Pit that “stays true to origins.” Sad thing is, most owners, as we’ve seen and read over and over don’t realize as much until it’s too late…

As I mentioned up-thread, I am a dog lover myself, but don’t particularly care for toy breeds. I want a DOG, not a shrunk version of one. Thus I’ve owned both a GSD & a Dobie. I also spent countless hours both training them and, obviously, enjoying them. Now, I welcome you to look at the mauling stats of both of them over say, the past 40 years and see how they match to the Pitbulls. Simply no comparison. And mind you, neither GDSs nor Dobermans are dogs to be trifled with.

In any event, stay well, enjoy & train your pet well – honestly hope you never come to regret it.

PS – IMHO, no dog like a Doberman (fixed of course, as any dog should be). They’ve well earned their nickname as “The Cadillac of Dogs.” Had her house trained in three days – of course it meant taking her out @ 3/4 A.M. for two months or so for as you well know 8 weeks old puppies can’t hold their bladder long. After that? Never an “accident,” other than a puke or two due to her willingness to eat anything in sight – which was also corrected later on.

And yes, I know, just sheer anecdotal & biased ‘evidence’…but I was so damn proud of her! :::::le sigh:::

Note that they weren’t known or represented as Shepherds or Shepherd mixes, nor were they known or represented as Labs or Lab mixes, nor Corgis or Corgi mixes, etc. They were known and/or represented to be pits and/or pit mixes. Perhaps in some instances a dog that could be viewed as a Shepherd mix, or a Retriever mix, but also by squinting and closing one eye might also sorta-kinda, in a bad light, be seen as a pit mix is so identified by the media because it fits the scary stereotype. But I am unconvinced that the misidentification issue is so huge that it, by itself, will reduce “pit bull fatalities” to a percentage of total fatalities commensurate with actual pit population percentages.

So it should be no surprise that there are also a large number of dogs whose appearance better fits “pit bull mix” than it does any recognized breed or any other mix. And a whole lot more that arguably (and here I’m giving all the weight I’m willing to give to the ‘mis—id’ cites) appear somewhat or partly like pit mixes even if close scrutiny suggests they’re possibly not. And an awful lot of owners that, for whatever proper or improper reason, like to refer to their own dogs as pits or pit mixes, and breed to produce more of the same. At least, until something bad happens.

Quoting this whole shit because it is the thought process I have every time I read these threads.

My list isn’t arbitrary.

The victim is either dead, or alive. That eliminates opinion.

The victim either has all of their legs and arms, or they do not. That eliminates any opinions about how serious a bite was. It something that can be measured.

Large live stock greatly differ than a cat, or a corgi. We all know what large livestock means. It was either a horse, bull, Llama, or something of equal or greater size. Rats, armadillos, raccoon, squirrels - don’t even bother.

The victim either did or did not require a medivac helicopter. I leave that unbiased decision to the EMT’s.
By the way, what is this proper equipment the police in TN should have had, this week, when they were forced to shoot a nutters pit bull 3 times point blank before it released its death grip via a dirt nap? Taser? Do you really want me to list all of the cases of pit bulls impervious to taser voltage / amperage / wattage as they maintain their maulings? Really? The police are not AC. AC would not have arrived in any reasonable amount of time. And if it was after hours, weekend, or holiday - not at all.

Pit bulls are like convicts on crack - if you ever watch COPS - you will see many cases with criminals on crack or meth are impervious to a taser. Pit bulls were bred to disregard pain signals and to attack, unprovoked, until death to they part. With each generation, they got better at those qualities.

Dog fighters understand this - they choose exclusively pits.

So what is this proper equipment that would have saved the nutters life in Johnson City this week?

Get your head of that book " The Pit Bull Placebo" by National Canine Research Org founder Karen Delise, who only writes of “police riding into town with both guns blazing at anything that resembles a pit bull” - while making no mention of the countless lives, even nutter lives, saved by police deadly use of gunfire.

Thanks! I was wondering if anybody noticed. Or if this thread had become just another series of back and forth assertions with no one actually listening to anything that was said.
