Shayna explained what she said, though it was pretty fucking obvious she did not say what you claim she said. I’m not sure I like this place anymore. My memory is getting better and I’m starting to remember who is unpleasant, stupid, and crazy. One or two I’ll forgive, but you’ve hit the trifecta lately. ---

Oh, and I heard someplace today that in 1900 pitbull-types were so popular in the US that they made up fully half the dog population. Yet the US is still inhabited by humans, many of whom are descended from people living here in 1900. Me, for instance. There apparently was no massive depopulation caused by all those pits running loose (few if any leash laws), or we’d have heard about it. I need to verify the dog statistic and check for the inevitable mass killings. ---

Since I quoted **Shayna** directly, my statement was not completely off-topic. It was a reply to something she said. And, as I posted, my remark was as valid as any other post in this thread- but it did lead the conversation in another direction. Hence my remark on not wanting to do a big hijack of a thread on murderous pit bulls. Instead of a hijack, here’s [a separate thread on what a nun is and whether or not God is physically manifested through nuns.](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?p=17052239#post17052239). I have a question for my fellow pit-parents: do your kids have unusually thick nails, with unusually long quicks? My girl is turning out to be on the small side, but she’s got some serious feet and some VERY serious toenails, which are much too thick to cut, and especially so because the quick runs far into the nail. Is this a pit bull bug, or a feature? (I am awaiting delivery of what appears to be a high-end nail grinder reduced to a ridiculously low price on Amazon. I bought one of those "As Seen On TV versions, but it wasn’t nearly tough enough to do the job…) ---

I use a dremel tool with a sanding cone on our dogs’ toenails. They didn’t like it at first (and still don’t) but rewarding good behavior is a great training tool. Initially I took off 1/16 inch every few days, rewarding with turkey liver after each foot. You can go beyond the quick if necessary, since the heat generated cauterizes any bleeding. ---

My dog’s nails get worn down enough from his regular activity I’ve only ever needed to trim his dew claws when they get too sharp for comfort. ---

My pit bull/German shepherd mix gets some crazy long nails. He’s pretty good about letting me cut them, though, with doggy nail cutters. The pit bull/Sharpei mix manages to keep his nails short somehow. ---

I have a professional groomer come with their dog-washing van once a month and they trim the doggie’s nails when they give them their baths. But yes, they have incredibly long quicks. ---

Animals’ (dogs, cats, birds) quicks recede when you cut their nails, but you have to clip them only a bit at a time, with some days between clippings. And think about filling your lungs with powdered dog nails before using one of those grinders. You know where your dog walks. Gross!
