PIT Maneuver and Motorcycles

It’s also possible to fall from 30,000 feet without a parachute and survive. Results shown are not typical.

Apropos of nothing, this is very similar to the difference between the various types of falls in downhill skiing. I’ve had several falls over the years…the safest type is what you would call a “low-side” fall where your downhill ski loses its edge on the snow (usually due to icy conditions) and you slide out. As long as you don’t slide into a barrier or tumble, you’re almost always ok even at fairly high speed.

Last year, however, I did the equivalent of a “high-side” fall while skiing in which my skis hit something and stopped dead, causing me to pitch forward head first downhill. I landed hard directly on my head and left shoulder. I was wearing a helmet, but completely separated my shoulder AC joint. :face_with_head_bandage:

Two broken feet, was riding again in a couple months.

Bike surfing? How do you embed YT videos?

That was impressive!

For me, it mostly works if you close the preview window and post the link right before hitting reply. And don’t edit once posted.

It’s almost like a magic incantation: no one know why it works, or doesn’t work, but if you follow the steps and recite the incantation, you can usually post a vid. I did the same thing in my first bike crash video, and it didn’t become playable, it remained a link.

Coincidentally, I saw an article this weekend regarding this. In the UK they have so much moped crime they have authorized using cars to stop them.

Am I supposed to care? Resisting arrest is anarchy in action.

There’s a bug in Discourse, our forum software. It didn’t used to do that but it’s been broken for some time now.

Yes, draft the reply without YT link. Make sure it’s ready to post. Then:

Hold your breath
Paste in the YT link
Press REPLY
Breathe

All in quick succession.

You will not be able to edit the post, once posted.

Most moped (if like the ones sold in Canada) are supposedly limited to 50kph/30mph. Scooters, not so much. I suppose knocked off a moped around 30mph or less is a lot less threatening than a high speed motorcycle chase. Heck, bicycles get up to 20mph routinely. When I had a motorbike, it was only 500cc and still could get up to 95mph before I chickened out, on an empty flat straight-away. I would not want a close encounter of the pavement kind (let alone obstacles) at that speed.

It seems the moped thieves in London are good boys and wear helmets - presumably to aid in hiding identification too.

Hit the slash key

It’s what works for me.

Thanks to all for the responses. I’m not a biker. (I rode one once and decided it’s not for me.)

The responses have been enlightening and educational. I respect bikers when driving, but have a hard time with lane splitters and those bikers who can’t help it to slalom thru traffic (at high speed, heavy traffic, or both).

Plenty of videos on Instagram of bikers cutting between traffic lane splitting well above the speed of other traffic. Usually these are posted because they don’t end well, although the helmet cam content survives. Even the best drivers may have difficulty noticing someone with a small profile approaching from behind, not in a lane, One car passes another and then changes lanes in front of it when clear, not realizing a bike is coming between them. Who needs PIT maneuvers when bikers do it to themselves?

Even sillier are the bikes that get even with being cut off, if they stay upright, by breaking off a side mirror. In one case the driver swerved into the bike knocking it down (“I was startled, your honor”). In another, the Tesla video cams showed the whole process - the driver took it to police, who said (California?) if damage was over $800 it was a felony and the license was readable in the video. What are the odds that repairing a mirror and door on a Tesal are over $800? Pretty good.

Lane-splitting is legal in California.

I’ve been lane splitting for years. At this point, probably thousands of miles. 95% of my riding miles have been daily commuting in SF Bay Area traffic, 40-60 miles each way. Lots of lane splitting.

To a car driver this may sound unlikely, hard to believe, but when done correctly it is quite safe to do. One basic rule is to avoid splitting when a car has an open space next to it — because it can quickly and unexpectedly change lanes.

And I’ve done a lot of lane splitting 2-up, with my wife on the back seat.

And I ride quiet motorcycles, BMWs. Most recently an R1200RT, and before that an R1100GS.

Every motorcycle who splits lanes removes a vehicle length of traffic from the lanes of travel. Lane splitting helps all drivers, of bikes and of cars, by reducing traffic congestion.

You can do anything if you’re careful. One lesson I heard and used very quickly, going from bicycle to moped to motorbike, is defensive driving. What gives a dent on a car can be lethal on a bike. Yes, be aware that people may not expect you, or see you, particularly if going much faster than other traffic. They may do something not because they are jerks (or words to that effect) but because they don’t see you - plan for that like yourself, and you will be fine. Defensive driving, just like wearing a helmet, is simply a precaution and prudent.

I am surprised that the London police would deliberately cause a two-wheel vehicle to crash, but as the spokesperson says, it has not resulted in serious injuries… yet. I wonder if the protective clothing factors into it - were those videos in winter and fall? Will they take into consideration if the moped rider is wearing only shorts and a tee shirt in summer? (At least that way, if the thief flees, they leave a lot of DNA behind.)

Great points about defensive driving and being careful. When I started riding my brother told me: pretend as if you are invisible.

It’s not legal in Pennsylvania.

This is important. If you lane-split in PA you’re going to doing it in an environment where the car drivers aren’t expecting you and won’t be looking out for you. In CA, car drivers know that bikers can lane-split and know to watch out for it in heavy traffic.

Car drivers tend to look for other cars and ignore everything else. I had a woman look right at me once then pulled out right in front of me.

I have also had people come into my lane because they didn’t see me (just checked their mirrors, didn’t bother to check their blind spot). A lot of folks hate loud Harleys like mine, but in situations like this, revving the engine usually gets their attention very quickly and has saved me from getting squished on more than one occasion.

A little paranoia is a good thing when you’re on a motorcycle. If you assume that everyone is out to get you it makes you a safer driver.

The incident with the Tesla I mentioned happened because the car was on Autopilot. The biker was miffed because most motorists (in California?) see an approaching bike splitting and move over a bit, Autopilot doesn’t have that programmed. Still, impolite behaviour does not warrant vandalism, but it can result in a warrant.
