The abstract and recapitulations of the article are what I have access to. Given that 20 breeds were identified I have no doubt that there were confirmed Pit Bulls in the mix.
I’d actually be surprised if they were not overrepresented because, as sports cars are a bit more likely to be driven fast and furious by reckless drivers, pits (bred by backyard breeders) are a bit more likely to be kept not as pets but as resident dogs, to not have been neutered, to be inadequately supervised, and to have been neglected and/or abused. And those are the factors that correlate with the rare fatal dog bite related fatalities.
Some dogs are kept as weapons (either with defensive use in mind, or as an intimidation accessory) rather than as pets … and then not safely stored. Someone acquiring a dog as such a weapon is going to pick a strong looking dog that is the current holder of the bad-ass rep. Just like Bieber was not going to take the family mini-van for his drag race, preferring to do it in his Lamborghini Gallardo LP550-2 Spyder, those wanting a dog as a weapon won’t pick a Dauschaund or a Dalmation (both breeds known for problems with aggression, biting, and Dalmations larger than Pits) but will pick one that people have irrational fear over.
That said what I suspect and would be surprised if not true is not what we actually know. What we actually know is that using media reports alone is an inadequate method and that when more fully investigated there is no evidence of any breed being over-represented (lack of evidence is not proof that it is not true though). Overwhelmingly fatal dog bits are related to controllable factors like keeping a dog as a pet rather than as a weapon, neutering the animal, providing adequate supervision, not abusing or neglecting the animal, so on.
Actual breed temperament on testing place the major Pit Bull breeds, the American Pit Bull Terrier and the American Staffordshire Terrier, as pretty non-aggressive dogs. Owned by responsible owners as loved pets and supervised as they should be they apparently are goofballs. I’ll still go my cuddley greyhound couch potatoes but dogs are all about the match for your household.
