Pitting ALL those who are Ok with a man watching a child being raped

Which Paterno believed Curley and Schultz were conducting. McQueary himself testified that in speaking to Schultz in his capacity as overseer of the campus police, he felt he was speaking in effect to the district attorney. Both Paterno and McQueary believed that a proper investigation would be conducted.

The explanation is that McQueary may have misinterpreted what he saw and that fondling or something of a sexual nature was not in fact going on.

Yeah, yeah, I get ya. Maybe Sandusky never even intended to have the boy naked in the shower in the first place, right? Maybe he just … ooops … spilled a soda on his shirt and had him take it off to clean it. I’m following your logic.

Fucking freak-show.

So your idea of honest, quality debate is to make up a bunch of nonsensical comments intended to illustrate my thinking in ways that my own words apparently don’t, and then to condemn me as a fucking freak show for the thinking you’ve dreamed up which doesn’t come close to anything I’ve actually said?

So you’re assuming that eight-word summary (“fondling or doing something of a sexual nature”) was the sum total of McQuery’s report? That Paterno asked absolutely no follow-up questions whatsoever?

I’m not seeing a likely interpretation that doesn’t cast Paterno as willfully blind or determinedly incompetent.

Oh, I don’t have to make anything up. I’ll lay money you’re whipping out some new salacious narrative before the end of this page about all the ways that Sandusky didn’t fuck a kid.

What I’m seeing is that Paterno knew he wasn’t qualified by training or position to investigate what McQueary saw or thought he saw and so he therefore assured McQueary he had done the right thing in reporting it and then passed it up to the proper authorities to see if there was anything to it. In other words it wasn’t Paterno’s position to dig into and try to find out what happened. His responsibility, strengthened by deliberately written law, was to pass McQueary’s suspicions on to the authorities on campus whose job, training and position did qualify them to conduct such an investigation.

And then ignore it for 10 years. Good job, Joe.

Uh, yes. You did. It’s right there in black and white.

For all he knew the investigation found nothing actionable. And who knows? He may have asked and been told just that. So far as I know the meme that he never asked about it is just another supposition, though clearly it would be proof of nothing had he not.

Yeah, it’s the subsequent decade of inaction that’s the problem. I can certainly understand it - Paterno passes on McQueary’s information and after a few months go by, washes his hands of it, chooses not to think about it…

Stupid and short-sighted, to be sure - if Sandusky liked touching little boys, he certainly wasn’t going to stop on his own (though I guess there was the chance he would quietly die of a heart attack or in a car accident and take his ugly secrets with him), and by not taking active steps to sever his connections to Penn at the time, Paterno just assured the damage would ultimately be far worse.

The amount of spin necessary to cast Paterno as an innocent is, to be generous, heroic.

Sandusky and McQueary were around Paterno for the next decade after Paterno was told Sandusky had done something sexual with a child in an isolated shower at night. The administrators were easily accessible. I wonder how Paterno could stand looking at Sandusky and McQueary all the time.

McQueary was never questioned by the police. The crime was never reported to the police. If Paterno had not intentionally ignored it, it would have been impossible not to know something was wrong. It would have been less than impossible to think everything was alright.

The question is: is there anything morally wrong with Paterno saying “not my problem” and ignoring it.

I believe the answer is “yes.” Anyone should have reported to the police. But Paterno had a much larger responsibility. Because Sandusky was using Paterno and Penn State to help him abuse kids.

  1. Paterno and his players continued to support Second Mile while Sandusky used it to find new victims. Paterno betrayed both the victims and his own players by giving Sandusky support while ignoring what he had been told.

  2. Sandusky retained high levels of Penn State access. He continued to run overnight camps for 9 year olds on a Penn State campus, which he advertised by touting his Penn State Football connections. Seriously. He still brought victims to Penn State football practice.

Paterno was simply not in a moral position to say “not my problem” and let Sandusky do his thing.

God damn, you football types are competitive.

Fuck me. What the fucking fuckity fuck?

Yeah, but after ten years and seventeen underaged kids slipping naked in the shower, you’d think the Penn State program would have sprung for some bath mats.

Thank God Jerry was around to catch them all or there’d be a serious liability issue to contend with.

Or maybe the kid was choking and Sandusky was giving him the heimlich manauever!

Forget Paterno – why are you so eager to defend Sandusky, Starving Artist? What about the other victims who accused Sandusky of abuse? Did you read their accusations? The grand jury testimony? Did you even see them at all?

“There are none so blind as those who refuse to see.”

Ah, the Three’s Company defense. Which, despite your thou-protest-too-much assertions to the contrary, you are interested in only because you believe the entire law against child molestation is a liberal conspiracy, due to Joe Paterno being a prominent supporter of the Republican death cult.

Find a way for hell to actually exist and then go there.

There is no question about it. I’m sure he’s a card carrying member of NAMBLA. It is apparent from his posts that he has a LOT of experience teaching little boys how to shower, playing “keep-a-way with the soap”, and giving them naked bear hugs. His theory that if the little boy isn’t screaming while being sexually molested by an adult male, then it’s no big deal is fucking nauseating.

I’m hoping that he is posting from prison and is not actually on the streets posing a threat to every little boy in his path. :shudder:

Of course, everyone realizes there’s some grade A USDA Top Sirloin trolling going on here. Er, I hope.

OMG I think (hope) you are right since that will mean he will be imprisoned for life soon. The thought of that creepy boy rapist SA/JS walking the streets is enough to make me puke. For all the prepubescent boys out there I hope he gets a life sentence.
