I was replying to doreen’s “don’t encounter at all”. I do have East Asian friends, actually. I don’t see them as regularly as East-Asian-on-the-Street, but I’ve certainly talked to them about racism and sexism etc. The more I post here, the more I realise how anomalous my entire circle must be, that we talk about this kind of thing all the time. ---

I think that is unusual. My SIL is east Asian. I think she was actually born in China, although her accent says she grew up in the US. We are fairly friendly, and talk frequently. I know a lot about the trials of her job, what real estate she likes, all sorts of stuff. But I can’t recall her talking about the experience of being a Chinese American. I guess my Chinese-American college roommate has talked more about that. It’s affected her more as a member of a Jewish congregation, where people look at her face and assume she’s not Jewish, than in her general life. But stuff got a lot worse during the pandemic, when “Asian hate” got popular. ---

I’m guessing around 50 or 60 when I was working (up until a few weeks ago) , not counting people I just pass on the street , which I didn’t consider an encounter and would have no way to count but I guess that would raise it a bit . Fewer now. But although I myself am a non-Hispanic white, I neither restrict myself to my own group nor deliberately avoid it. Nearly all of my neighbors are black, Hispanic or Asian, and all but one of my coworkers in an office of 75 were black , Hispanic or Indian. The clients served at that office were maybe 20% white but I didn’t actually have contact with many of them. Most of the people working in stores and at medical offices (including the doctors) that I encounter are not non-Hispanic whites My husband is Chinese, which means that I never even encountered white people within my own household, since my kids identify as bi-racial. My relatives are mostly (but not entirely) non-Hispanic whites and my husband and I have some non-Hispanic white friends but we don’t see them even as often as every month. ---
