You were watching the Cubs game when the fan was hit with the foul, too. Hmm. Maybe you got the bad juju?
I was at a stadium (can’t remember which one, certainly not Yankee Stadium) that did have plexiglas installed. Allows children to still see while reducing the risk. You just can’t lean over and try to catch that foul pop up that’s ‘oh-so-close’ to your deck, but that’s not a cross I’m willing to die for (or even try to champion). My point is to address the greater danger, not the negligible danger. One is reasonable, one isn’t. 3 deaths, 1 stadium, 8 years versus 1 death, all of MLB, 150 years. Had you called for protection on the upper decks in the OP, I would have backed you, because I’ve always felt I’ve had to be more careful navigating the steps and cautious near the rail (I used to have season tickets in the 2nd row of the 3rd deck at Yankee Stadium, and I get 1 game/year 6 rows behind the visitors dugout from another source).
Jackmanii, I can’t see any owner ponying up the dough to swap that out every game, and by game two…let’s just say it would be a bit pungent. And forget about late July day games…even a fresh layer would be…aromatic…by the second inning.
I know you’re trying to make a funny, but in reality if something happens during a Braves game, odds are I’m either at the game or watching from home. I go to 20-30 home games a year, and watch almost all of the est of the games. The only time I miss a game is when they are on a west coast road trip during the work week.
Just curious, how do you feel about them moving to yet another stadium? Is parking/traffic that inconvenient for those driving in?
It’s a shame that the guy fell. I don’t know if alcohol played a role, but perhaps they need to start limiting beer sales. Better yet, don’t sell alcohol. College sports do quite nicely with no beer in the stands.
I think some review of the building codes might be in order. Maybe raise the railing height but make them Plexiglas. When people are falling out of walkways and concourses, I put a little blame on the building codes. It should be harder to fall to your death than it apparently is.
I hate the new location. They are moving to an location, that, logistics-wise, is going to be a nightmare to get to for me. I honestly think I will go to less than 10 games a year at the new location.
And no, parking/traffic isn’t the reason for the move. It will be the same or potentially worse in the new location. The real reason for the move is two fold. First off, the public stance of the club is they are moving to where the will have far more control over development around the stadium, and the revenue that they can see from that.
Secondly, the unspoken is a little bit of "we think the people who live in the suburbs are afraid to come downtown, so let’s move to the suburbs. Read into that what you will.
It looked like the Little League World Series stadium had netting from foul pole to foul pole. I wonder how long they’ve had that. I try to watch the LLWS every year and never really noticed, but never looked for it, either.
