Pitting Roland Deschain: Abortion, Margaret Sanger and the Nazis

Yeah, but you have to admit that he is King of Unintentional Setups for Snarky Comments, so it’s not all bad.

The link in the OP doesn’t work for me.

Why do people think it’s less correct to think of a fetus as a human than not?
At what point does it become a human anyway? Sometime before birth?
If it’s an early birth, then does that mean that the mother gave birth to something that isn’t human?

I’m honestly curious.

Ithink that would need to begin with defining what is a human. For me, it’s an entity that has, or has had independant though, action or existance. You’ll probably find many people have their own definitions, which is probably where the confusion begins.

Based my personal definition, an egg prior to fertilisation is not a human. Nor is a fertilised egg just after conception. I would support prevention of a completed pregnancy in both situations (either birth control or through an abortion). Some people would say that the second situation is a ‘potential human’, and as such the abortion is wrong. i.e. for some people it’s an absolute, and for others it’s a continuum.

I guess, the line for me is drawn probably in the second trimester, where brain activity begins. I think it is irresponsible to allow a pregnancy to progress to this stage before taking action to end it, and it is harder to argue you are just removing a bunch of cells.

Ah, Dio… I knew I could count on you to say exactly what I was trying to make clear, in much more understandable terms. Thank you.

Roland is now denying that he is a nurse. In Post 145 he said he is a nurse, just not an RN. Now he doesn’t remember making that claim. That’s a big no-no in the medical professions.

There’s a guy in another chatroom that reminds me of Roland. I suspect that even negative attention is better than getting no attention at all. He’s probably thinking to himself, “I’m not really mentally ill; they just think that because I’m saying all of these weird things to get their attention.” It apparently never occurs to him that his desperation for attention and his need to be different – and to have that difference acknowledged, saluted, and martyred – appears to be just a tad out of his own control.

Hats off to you, good sir.

Roland, Roland, Roland…

I personally feel he should be forced to change his user name. He taints the name of Roland Deschain of Gilead.

This (notice I didn’t say “our”) Roland has definitely forgotten the face of his father.

A couple of points in reply:

  1. I erred in saying that I was a nurse. What I meant to say was that I currently perform as a CNA/QNA many of the functions of a nurse including giving medications (in a LTC facility), inserting cathethers ect. This was in reply to the common sentiment (in that thread) that my becoming a nurse would be a “bad” thing. Basically, my argument was that the major difference IF I graduate will be that I will earn more money not really the duties I perform (although they will be somewhat different they will probably be 60% the same). I stated many times in the operative thread that I was not only a student nurse, but that I was struggling.

  2. I spend a great deal of time playing with my son. Don’t any of you have children? How is my posting here that different from going to the golf course or going to the movies? This is the height of my recreation during school unless you consider the volunteer fire dept. recreation.

  3. A comparison to the Holocaust was ill advised. That is why I initially said that abortion “approached but did not equal” the Holocaust (in my opinion). I did however use the Nazi’s to illustrate my point about having a hard time respecting the objections of those whom I consider to advocate evil things complaining about much less evil things (cheating verses abortion). Note also that I pointed out the fallacy of my own argument when I said that “two wrongs don’t make a right.”.

  4. I take your argument about Sanger not endorsing eugenics seriously (although I’m not convinced of the objectivity of Planned Parenthood). However, the burden of proof is on me since I’m the one making the allegation that’s why I didn’t respond. Sorting out the truth from what I’ve been led to believe will be difficult and will take time that I do not currently have in school (but will have this Summer hopefully). Therefore, until I can cite evidence that she did in fact support birth control, and abortion for the purposes of eugenics (from sources that are not considered overtly one sided) I retract the statement and apologize.

  5. I do not deliberately “yank anyones chain”. In fact, I find it more than a little distressing that so many people find my sincere opinions to be either crazy or deliberately calculated to cause angst. Indeed, here in central Indiana at least among the cadre that I graduated from highschool with (and still talk to) they are not even viewed as remarkable (okay some of my questions about relationships might be, I just don’t know). It is not my intention to make anyone angry and it is even less my intention to hurt anyones feelings. If I have done this I sincerely apologize.

  6. I am 35 and trying to enter a new career after losing everything in a failed mortgage company. I’m not proud of this situation, but neither am I ashamed the very fact that I haven’t yet established myself in a career is something that I think about daily. However, feeling sorry for myself will not make things better. Doing my best in school just might. We went back to school about five years ago with the plan being that at least one of us would become CRNA’s (and preferably both). Right now it seems as if at least my wife is on track.

  7. My wife is a wonderful person and is the furthest thing from cruel that I can imagine. It’s true that she would rather I not post, but she has come to accept that this is something that I really enjoy, learn from, and which doesn’t cost money or take me away from the house.

Roland, please read my above post. Sanger did believe in a form of eugenics, at least in the earlier part of her career. I offered a cite for a peer-reviewed source.

Frankly, I don’t care what you think about Margaret Sanger. I’m just looking to fight a little ignorance, here.

Those who yank chains sometimes find that the Moderators on the other end yank back, harder.

Roland Deschain is banned

Well, I wish him well. At the least, I think he has some serious emotional issues, and I know I felt very uncomfortable reading some of his posts. I tended, toward the end, to avoid them.

Get some help, Roland. Now.
