> You assume that all pieces of pepperoni are equal. You will run into differents sizes and thicknesses of many materials and at least in my experience (4 years Round Table) everything was made by weight. So if our food supplier sent us a box of 12 slice to the ounce pepperoni instead of 15/oz by accident and we used it, you would still have 4 ounces of pepperoni on your pizza even though it was now 48 slices not 60. Legally we would still be making the same pizza because we are using the same qty of ingredient. Independents would have even more flexibility to try different styles of items making it less likely to “look like the picture”.

> Why do some pizza places say ‘No double toppings’? Why can I have and ounce of pepperoni and an ounce of sausage, but not two ounces of pepperoni? I realize that for each additional topping, the amount of each one gets smaller, that just makes sense. But it makes NO sense that I can’t have two helpings, at whatever level my pizza’s going to have, of the same thing? Why can I have a $1.50’s worth of mushrooms on a sausage pizza, but not a $1.50’s worth of sausage on it?

I thought by now someone who enforces that stupid rule somewhere would have told us why it exists. The best I can get from the various answers would be something like this: If you bought a one-topping pepperoni pizza you’d see there were 12 slices (or whatever) on it. And then if you bought a double-topping pepperoni, you’d find there were only 20, not the 24 you’d expect. This would only be a problem with pepperoni and salami and canadian bacon, since one can’t really count blobs of sausage or hamburger (ugh!) or broccoli (yum!). And to keep from having to explain why a pizza can’t have literally double or tripple the amount of toppings (because it won’t cook properly–or else single topping pies would have to be really skimpy)… to keep from ever having to explain that, they just throw out this stupid rule, and then pretty much ignore it anyway, at least for customers who schmooze them enough. Ah, the advantages of having breasts. 😃

I thought **Lawoot** did just explain it.

Also, sorry have to ask, but aren’t you being a little bit too cranky about this “issue”?

Wait, where can we get breasts on our pizza?

No, Lawoot explained why there can’t actually be double or triple the amount of toppings, and I can understand that. He doesn’t explain why, if I’m paying for a two-topping pizza, that it can’t be covered with all the same stuff, only the larger amount of it that any other two topping pie has on it. 6 ounces of pepperoni instead of 3 oz pepperoni and 3 oz sausage. That’s not going to cook any differently.

Cranky? I guess so. I just hate stupid rules, and unless someone who REALLY KNOWS can answer my question, I’ll continue to think it’s stupid. But I won’t bother the folks here on the boards much more. I had hoped to get an answer, but it’s really a lot of speculation. Lawoot comes close, and sounds authoritative, but he doesn’t actually answer the question. I don’t ask why there isn’t twice as much total topping; I want to know why it can’t be all the same substance. And since a lot of places seem to ignore the ‘rule’ or don’t even have it, the issue clearly isn’t proper cooking.

Pepperoni is just about the cheapest thing you can put on a pizza, according to my ex-pizza making boyfriend.

That’s why Little Ceasars can sell pepperoni pizzas for $5, but other toppings cost more.

Geez, some people you have to tell everything… have your date/gf/wife/so sit opposite you, then ask her to lean over so you can whisper something in her ear. There: breasts on your pizza. 😃
