FYI, the original Uno’s and Due’s downtown use a different supplier for their sausage and tomato sauce than the other stores. Also, about 1/2 of the stores are company owned, and 1/2 are franchises. While the franchises are supposed to keep in line with the standards of the company-owned, sometimes they are not quite up to par.

Troy used to have at least one good place for pizza-The Villa Cafe. Awesome garlic chicken white pizza, and a great dinner menu. Unfortunately, It burned down one night about three years ago and was never reopened.
That being said, I miss those rectangular, quasi-sicilian style pizzas that were all you could get in Troy, NY when I was growing up there.
The best pizza in Dayton OH, is Mama DeSalvo’s. Mmmmm, small hole in the wall italian place that makes wonderfull food in large portions as well.
As for chain pizza, I love Cassano’s. It is sad that they were doing so well, and then got bought out by of all companies, Greyhound. They wanted to put shops in the bus stations, needless to say, Cassano’s hasn’t recovered since.
Oh, as for Danato’s, expect them to be really branching out…they are owned by McDonalds now.
…as long as Schenectady, NY’s been touched upon, then it wouldn’t be just to ignore Fireside Pizza on Eastern Avenue across from the Price Chopper. And my Dad recently took me to a place that’s right in the downtown/center Sch’dy… I think on a corner… where would that have been? Like across from Proctor’s Theater and diagonal about 75 feet? Awesome pie to go… the place hasn’t been there very long but seemed to be owned by two brothers, dedicated as hell.
Please HELP ME RealityCheck!?!?!? I am counting on your knowledge of Sch’dy pizza on this one!
Hear hear! My nominees: John’s on Bleecker, or Patsy’s in East Harlem. (Each now has multiple locations, of which I am unalterably suspicious.)
I’m also rather fond of the Two Boots mini-chain, which is pizza with Cajun toppings - andouille sausage, etc. (The name comes from the shapes of Italy and Louisiana.) It’s certainly not “authentic,” but so well made that I forgive them.

Hey rhythmdvl for me, THE Ray’s was the one on 11th Street and 6th Avenue. Fantastic stuff. Alas, it is no more. Oh, it’s still there all right, but the pizza has changed and it’s not the Ray’s of old.
I haven’t been to John’s on Bleecker Street in awhile but I remember it as being one of the very best. I’d also like to mention V&T on Amsterdam Ave. Great pizza. For those New Yorkers who haven’t ventured to Grimaldi’s in Brooklyn - you gotta check this pizza out. OxyMoron check out the Patsy’s connection to Grimaldi’s.
Danke, BobbySuezQ. That’s sorta out there for me, but I may just venture by one of these days. For does not the Fifteenth Commandment state: Thou shalt not pass up good pizza?
See, I wasn’t gonna bring this whole thing up - I even managed to avoid it in the mondo-Rays-listing - but everyone hasta understand that although New York is less into toppings than other places[sup]*[/sup], we do like our pizza with…
extra litigation. I can’t find anything on the Ray’s mess (not surprising since I think it started in the early 80s), but needless to say everyone sued everyone else, with the ultimate result (IIRC) that everyone got to keep using the name.
*See, we know that proper pizza needs only cheese…
How about Paradiso Pizzaria, Northampton MA.? Claudio does good with food, no question.
Anyone?
Nice, thin crust with things like roasted calimari and smoked jalapenos… and an awesome selection of wines by the glass and draft beers including John Courage.
But if we’re really talking about Northampton, than it would be a kick in the tummy to leave out Joe’s Cafe on Market street… The original awesome pizza… No yuppiness about Joe.
New York is the only place to eat pizza, I’m telling you. I don’t know any places by name in the city, but out on Long Island the best pizza, I think, is Little Vincents, in Huntington and Lake Ronkonkoma. It’s awesome. There are plenty just like them of course. I go to school now in Washington, D.C. and the pizza just isn’t the same. I think it’s the water, but what do I know?
