**R ** is for Rockford, Illinois!
Once rated by Money magazine as the worst place to live in the United States, it has also been deemed by Self magazine as one of the country’s ten most unhealthy cities.
See the colorful artistry of the city’s Vice Lords and Disciples (or whatever gangs have replaced them) downtown. Enjoy the spectacle of gang violence in the housing projects. Breathe deeply of the industrial-byproduct-tinged air. Swim in the only slightly toxic waters of the Rock River, and beware the mutant catfish and remains of sundry criminals who have in some way offended the local elements of organized crime.
Or, on a more serious note, go to http://www.gorockford.com/funthings/artculture.cfm . The link is for fun things to do in Rockford, Illinois. I only looked at the list briefly, but I didn’t see the Time Museum. The Time Museum, last time I was there, had the world’s biggest collection of clocks. Hardly an all-day trip, but you could kill an interesting half hour there. Plus, if I remember, there’s a bar in close proximity. The other museums ain’t half bad either. The people are generally nice, the shopping centers are pretty big, there are a few okay restaurants, supposedly the golf courses are good if you like that so-called sport, there is a symphony orchestra which I have enjoyed in the past . . . hell, you could really enjoy a visit to Rockford for a week or so if you wanted. The best time to go is in the autumn, when the tree-lined streets (in certain neighborhoods) and 7,000 acres worth of public parks explode into color. Rock Cut State Park near the city is nice as well. There are some great stores catering to lovers of comic books, music, and used books. Best of all, the phone book contains nine pages worth of pizza joints!
Noteworthy individuals from or based in Rockford, Illinois include:
Rock stars Cheap Trick.
The Rock Ness Monster (the largest fish of its kind–-I think it was a walleye, but I’m not sure–-ever caught).
Former presidential candidate John Anderson.
Thespian extraordinaire Ginger Lynn.
Brilliant college student Mephisto.
