Here’s some more trivia. Cities turning confiscated guns…via melting…into manhole covers. I can’t find the cite for NY, but here’s one from Hartford, Conn.
Here in Ottawa, Canada, because of frost heaves. Water leaking into the roadbed feeezes during cold weather and expands, raising the surface of the road. Sewer and water lines are normally below the frost line and are unaffected, with the net result that the road surface lifts and the manhole covers don’t, leaving a drop of several inches. (Has bad effects on the pavement, too.)
