Actually, the tunnels and bridges with tolls aren’t so bad. They’ve got video cameras watching everything and tow trucks ready to roll. The untolled bridges (Brooklyn, 59th St., etc. are awful for exactly the reason you imagine.
But the worst place to break down is in Keeves’ part of the world, specifically on the NJ Turnpike north of exit 10. If you take the car lane and break down, you find that there are three lanes of cars on one side of you, and three lanes of trucks on the other. Pretty scary place to spend 6 hours or so. In the history of the NJ Turnpike, no one has ever stopped intentionally. I finally ended up getting assistance by throwing a tire iron at the third passing State Trooper.
I thought of another place:
Whilst driving through California on a vacation (by myself) I drove from some obscure north central California city over to Eureka. It was getting late, the road was surrounded by forest on one side, and a beautiful river on the other (at the bottom of a steep little gorge) and the road twisted and turned like nobody’s business. Also, I kept seeing signs like “You’re in Bigfoot Country”. Didn’t see alot of people on the road and when I finally got to the Eureka KOA, I almost cried with relief. I guess that’s the product of being young and alone and with an overactive imagination. The only thing I could imagine was having Bigfoot step out of the woods and me running off the road into the ravine in fear! Sheesh, what a kid!
Cmkeller: yep, UTAH a pretty, great state. I’m not making that up, that’s our state motto! And I think I’ve been on the one you talked about when I was a kid.
The 70 route is well traveled but I don’t pick up hitchhikers so I doubt karma would swing my way!
And just a question Athena… Boulder UT? I thought Boulder was in CO? I can’t find my map to look. Just wondering. If there is a Boulder in UT I’ll bet it’s not nearly as cool at the one in CO!
Next time you come this way check out Arches Nat’l park – fabulous! We (my family) are river rats and spend most of our time on the Colorado River. Lots of fun in the sun!
Yup, there is a Boulder, Utah. And although it’s pretty, it’s not the town that Boulder is. I know that cuz I’m sitting here in Boulder, CO right now.
I’ve been to Arches a gazillion times. Moab is one of my favorite camping and motorcycling destinations. 'Course, getting OUT of Moab and trying to get a beer at some other little town is enough to try my patience! But Canyonlands/Arches/all that stuff is GREAT.
