The only times people usually abbreviate ‘aircraft’ is within the industry because they get sick of typing the word out over and over. But this isn’t an aviation board so we don’t do that.

This board is about fighting ignorance. I don’t see using jargon being conducive to that aim. Shibboleths are about identifying outsiders and enemies and keeping them out. That’s not what we do here.
Write to inform, not to confuse. Simple when you think about it, really.

I agree with this. The aircraft jargon is also particularly obnoxious in the Kobe Bryant thread. Assume the only flying I’ve done is flying balsa wood models with rubber band engines. Communicate with me so I can understand.

I agree with this. The aircraft jargon is also getting particularly obnoxious in the Kobe Bryant thread. Assume the only flying I’ve ever done is flying a balsa wood model with a rubber band engine and communicate with me so that I can understand. Spell out your terms the first time, and if you want to abbreviate after that, then go ahead.

It’s an ongoing problem on the SDMB, not just re: aircraft. It’s not good, and we should be better than that.
