We got a dog for the first time about a year ago. We have had cats before. I can testify that the stink level of our trash barrel reached unprecedented levels during the summer. We have now gotten used to it to some extent, but of course it’s winter now, so everything smells less, so maybe come May we will get that pungent hit when we enter the garage again on Mondays (Tuesday is trash pickup) ---

Oh my, that brings back memories of my daughter; for some reason riding in her car seat had an _extreme_ effect on her bowels. Yeah, I would pull up to the pump and put in a dollar’s worth just to toss the pampers. There were a few trips to Hilton Head (an 8 hour drive) where we’d pull out of our driveway, get 10 miles in, and she’d force a stop. ---

Did you miss the bit about it stinking worse than regular garbage? Yes, it _is_ noticeable. Or that it can get smeared inside the can, which is definitely stinkier until you clean it? Or perhaps it hasn’t occurred to you that while the garbage may not be mine anymore, the _garbage can_ most certainly is and I never said someone else could use it. In my development, we’re not allowed to leave garbage cans outside the house so it has to come into my garage. I use the garage every time I leave or enter the house, and, let me tell you, the _last time_ someone left their dog shit in my can after it had been emptied, the garage got really, really unbearable until the next pick up because the damn bag split when it hit the bottom of the can. It was really, really, _really_ annoying, disgusting, and nauseating to have to walk through a cloud of shit stench for several days that summer. Plus it made my car smell. Plus the smell leaked a bit into my house since it’s an attached garage and isn’t that a fun thing to have near a kitchen? Plus I had to clean the can afterward the garbage was finally picked up and that was oh, so less than pleasant. In short, just because you don’t understand why it bothers the people this has happened to doesn’t mean our feelings aren’t just as valid as yours. Stop poo-pooing them. ---

My partner is a contractor and rents plenty of dumpsters. They get used by the GP, he sorts thru, finds an address on a piece of junk mail and dumps it all on their yard. His dumpster company has pretty strict rules about what a construction dumpster can and cannot be used for. ---

Certainly not everyone cares about the cleanliness of their can, but enough people do that there are actual can cleaning services. You’d leave a busted, smeared bag of dog shit in your trash can and not make any effort to clean it? You realize from now until the end of time, I’m going to think of you as “OK with smeared dog shit guy”. Like this one guy at work who… once… 5 years ago… didn’t wash his hands after using the urinal is forever “doesn’t wash his hands guy” even though I’ve seen him wash his hands multiple times since then. ---

I’m talking about the big plastic Waste Management tubs that go from the back yard to the street and back again. I’ve never cleaned anything out of them, and at times they’ve stored everything from dog poop, to drywall, to dead skunks. They don’t smell particularly fresh, but that’s OK because I’m exposed to their smell once every few days for about 5 seconds when I open them, dump in a new trash bag, and close them again. Dog poop has never smelled particularly bad in there. Aside from the aforementioned skunk, the only time the trash can really stank was when I threw out some raw chicken breast that went past its expiration date; it sat in the can for three days before trash collection day and despite being in a bag it reeked to high heaven.
