Ponchos were popular when I was in 5th grade. I can’t possibly like them. Who does? Really. Who can stand such a insipid look? I know nothing about fashion, but come on! ---

So I see I’m not the only one who hates them. My 9-year-old and 7-year-old nieces think ponchos are all the rage. Maybe they’re cute on them, but on me? No way! I’d probably end up getting caught and hanging myself with it anyway. Plus, I think they’re ugly. But I’ve never pretended to be a fashion queen … so what do I know? ---

[This McCalls poncho pattern](http://store.sewingtoday.com/cat/mccall/lead/M3448.jpg) (from [McCall’s Patterns](http://store.sewingtoday.com/cgi-bin/mccallspatterns/shop.cgi?s.item.M3448=x&TI=40006&pageNum=8&M=&UK=34643746)) is okay. I might see myself wearing a poncho like that. But some others are plain dumb or stupid-looking. I mostly agree with the Slate article. ---

They’re all nasty - and make you look like an idiot. Of course, the strength of my opinion could just be the result of nasty memories about getting gum caught in both my poncho and my hair while riding in the back of my aunt’s trans-am around the age of 6. ---

I love ponchos. I have bought three so far this season. They are perfect to wear in the cool months of deep South Texas. ---

I think they’re ugly too…BUT they do cover an awful lot of you when it’s really coming down. I use them when I am hiking in the rain, since they pull over all the gear and keep everything dry. And I definitely don’t care much about fashion. ---

I just bought one last week since I bike to work and would like something to keep my dry in the wet winter months of the Pacific Northwest. I am sure I look stupid but I keep dry and a little warmer due to not being soaked when I get to work so I don’t really care. ---

Gah. I loathe the whole poncho concept, and it has unfortunately combined with another hot trend, knitting. I knit, and I read a knitting community journal for ideas/inspiration/support, and it seems like everyone and their sister is making a freakin’ poncho or “capelet” or shawl. I hate every last stinking one of them. And the worst part? Everyone in the knitting community is so enamored with them, that if you post pictures of anything else (like a sweater or felted bag), it goes virtually ignored. :mad: Me, I can’t wait until this stupid trend passes. ---

_Rain_ ponchos I understand, but ponchos look pretty much dumb on anyone unless they are super skinny and wearing one of those ones which is all lacy over a camisole. ---

I think they are hideous - and they are everywhere in the stores. I haven’t seen anyone wearing one yet, though. I love to shop, but I told my mom if I ever get a poncho to shoot me right then and there. Susan ---

Ugg I hate ponchos too - here is the full prayer. Our Fashion which art in Vogue, Hollow be thy name. Thy clothing come, thy will be done up in Iowa, as it is in Hollywood. Give us this season our little black dresses. And forgive us our fashion faux pas, as we forgive the faux pas of the movie stars. And lead us not into go go boots, but deliver us from ponchos: For thine is the in thing, and the trend, and the latest vogue, for ever and ever. Amen. ---

One of my cow-orkers was wearing one this morning. She looked as though she were being mugged by her grandma’s old couch throw. Rain poncho’s are good, fugly crocheted lump-makers are bad. ---

Ponchos are generally horrific. Only a few people can really carry them off (they look good on pregnant women, I’ve noticed) but everyone (at least here in Boston) is wearing them. Except me, I know better than to think it’d look good on me. People need to learn that fashion should be about what looks good on **them** , not on a random runway model. ---

I hate to buck the concensus, but I love 'em. They keep me warm, but leave my arms unencumbered, so I wear them to work all the time. I have a soft black knit triangular one with a fringe for when I’m out and about, and I’ve been told it’s flattering on me. (I’m the scrawny type.) It took me quite a while to find one which fit me correctly-- they can’t be too big or bulky or it looks bad. I also have a heavy wool square-shaped one which I bought in Mexico over a decade ago. It’s great for around the house, or lounging on the deck during cool evenings. I don’t wear it out in public, though, because it looks just like what it is: a blanket with a hole cut in the center, and I look like a tent fell down on me when I’m wearing it. What’s great about them is that they’re so warm, but you don’t feel like you’re wearing a coat. This is a great fashion age for me. I’m wearing the same old stuff, but now I’m in style!
