Please deliver me from ponchos

My wife just finished a fleece poncho for our 3yo daughter. She looks positively adorable in it. And it’s not bad on our little girl either!

Uh, sorry about that. Really, it looks great on her, and the shade of blue in the fleece just brings out the blue in my daughter’s eyes. Gorgeous.

Gah. I loathe the whole poncho concept, and it has unfortunately combined with another hot trend, knitting. I knit, and I read a knitting community journal for ideas/inspiration/support, and it seems like everyone and their sister is making a freakin’ poncho or “capelet” or shawl. I hate every last stinking one of them.

And the worst part? Everyone in the knitting community is so enamored with them, that if you post pictures of anything else (like a sweater or felted bag), it goes virtually ignored. :mad:

Me, I can’t wait until this stupid trend passes.

And this reminds me I have to take pictures of my finished Id’s Nodda Booga! bag and post them soon…

I utterly despise ponchos. Unless they’re plastic, and you’re using them to keep dry in a rainstorm while hiking in the mountains with a heavy pack. Then they’re great!

I was just in the Detroit Metro airport this evening and saw a turtleneck poncho on a gal and it looked excellent. I’m still not convinced that they look good on most people over the age of 6, though.

But how do you guys really feel about ponchos?

I bought one of the thinner ones to wear in the movies. My daughter told me it looked like I was wearing a doily. I hate it when she is right.

I hate to buck the concensus, but I love 'em. They keep me warm, but leave my arms unencumbered, so I wear them to work all the time.

But they make you look as if your arms are pinned to your sides…sort of like a straitjacket. A sweater seems a lot less intrusive. Wear one of those light ponchos and when you raise your arms to eat, the triangular part in the middle comes flapping up!
