Velvet Jones was the name I/we came up with for a rock band I was in some years ago. At the time I had never seen the SNL Eddie Murphy sketch and thought it was an original name. No one I talked to about the name clued me/us in. We released our first and only CD _The Power of Blue_\* under that name. There was another group in the area that went by the name Velvet Jones (they probably had seen the SNL sketch) so we eventually changed the name to Just Velvet. Then the band broke up but I’m still using it as a screen name on this and another message board. Maybe one day I’ll change. ---

I logged on to ask this same question. Mine is a homonymous phrase for a mispronunciation of my last name, a name that I share with a 16th century portrait artist famous for painting a couple of ambassadors and a weird looking skull. ---

You’re not making fun of me are you?). Strangely enough, I don’t drink coffee. Thing is, I’ve been called Bean or Beaner or Half Bean (even more creative, huh?) for as long as I can remember but I never thought of using it as a user name until I saw ‘Green Bean’ and thought, heh, that’d be cool. I guess I never really thought about what it would look like spelled out, it was always an auditory association with a mispronunciation I’ve been correcting for going on now 26 years (I’m 31, but didn’t get in the habbit of correcting folks till grade school). ---

**Cal Meacham** is the way-brainy, deep-voiced, tall and handsome hero of **This Island Earth** , a seminal 1950s science fiction movie that I watched endless times as a kid (I had the 16mm version – best you could do before VCRs). Cal was played by Rex Reason, who had the _perfect_ name to play a way-brainy, etc. scientist. In the movie he flies a jet, builds an alien device, fights extraterrestrials, and gets the good-looking woman scientist. I’m not as brainy as I’d like, and I have trouble subduing our three cats, let alone extraterrestrials. But I’m hoping some of the glitz will come to me by association. Actually, the movie is pretty dumb (“This is our cat neutron,” says one scientist. “We call him that because he’s so positive.” A warren full of scientists and no one calls them on _that_?) – it’s a hopeless dumbing-down of a very good (but out-of-print until recently) book by Utah Sf writer Raymond F. Jones. The story made a helluva lot more sense in the book, as did the title. No metalunan Mutants with exposed brains. No planet exploding into a star. I think they changed the story to make it simpler and to avoid giving moviegoers inferiority complexes.
