Well, my father’s last name was Simmons and its origin is a mystery to me. And my maternal grandfather’s first name was David which means something like “beloved by his people.” I just put the two together when I joined and voila, there it was. ---

Oh very well, as long as I’m not getting any work done anyway. We’ll start backwards, with the 47. You can find the full story [here](http://www.pomona.edu/Welcome/Trek/Trek.shtml), but the short version is that back in the 60s some math professor at Pomona proved that all numbers equal 47, so the number became a running gag at Pomona, and a Pomona graduate became a Star Trek scriptwriter, and now the number is everywhere in Star Trek. As for “spatial rift,” it’s a reflection on both my intended career (quantum gravity) and a pet theory that I keep in a jar on my desk for old times sake, namely that (in the spirit of the unification of electricity and magnetism, and energy and mass), all matter/energy will turn out to be quantum-scale distortions in the fabric of space. From there it’s just a hop, skip and a jump to the kind of spatial anomalies you see in science fiction, like rifts in space. 🙂 ---

IvoryTowerDenizen Most of my self image and identity is wrapped up in being a college professor. It was what I wanted to be since 2nd grade and the happiest day was when I finally landed a tenure track professorship. I had to look up how to spell Denizen, though. I don’t teach English! 🙂 ---

I don’t get out much, and it’s driven me crazy. Used to be **Steelerphan** , but I’m a lot more than that- and I found myself apologizing for and defending things that I have no control over, and I cared enough to let it bother me. I really suck at picking screen names- nothing ever seems right. I play online games using Major\_Disaster or p$ycho-daD, but I’m never satisfied. **Beware of Doug,** you should be shaking in your boots- I’m Doug. ---

Mine is the name of an unstable yet good-natured character in a rather obscure movie. He’s my personal hero because of his tenacity (obsession), resourcefulness (undirected), and charm (quickly makes convenient alliances). ---

Long boring story, sadly. I was at a friends house, he was doing something on the computer (possibly programming, or graphical…lots of mathematics symbols and writing) and a part of it among there was “shade (random numbers and symbols) edge” which I thought sounded pretty cool. I usually use that as my username on anything that requires one. Sadly, it was taken on here. And when it’s taken, I use synonyms - so “revenant” instead of “shade”, and “threshold” instead of “edge”. ---
