Please help identify an old Science Fiction movie...

For what it’s worth, the Trivia section for this movie at IMDB.com says “In the final shot we see the Ark passengers disembarking with an obvious painted background depicting Zyra. This bad painting was tacked on for the film’s sneak previews. Originally, producer George Pal wanted to depict Zyra as a miniature set, but Paramount shipped the film out before this could be done.”

I also remember reading somewhere that they just ran out of money at the end of production and that painting was all they could afford. (Sorry, no cite.)

Well it’s not a remake, but there’s Melancholia if you need a planet colliding with earth movie fix. It’s mostly a bunch people sitting around being sad or in denial so it doesn’t have the same vibe.

Yeah, but the fact that it’s a painting isn’t the issue – Chesley Boestell was FAMOUS for his incredibly realistic paintings of other planets and astronomical entities:

Clarke’s complaint was that the painting at the end didn’t look like Bonestell’s work – it looked like a Disney cartoon. And it does.

Oh, I agree. I think that phrase “to the chagrin of all” says everything. Bonestell had a real gift. Until this thread, I never imagined anyone would think that end painting was his.

Yeah, it gave me some terrible thrills.

Mrs. Pal?
