Please help me pick out DVD's for my elderly scientist father. Needs answers fastish

Yes. I was given a copy of The Day the Universe Changed as a gift. The three other Burke series I found in a library – they’re kinda pricey.

Might be interested in the “Ulitmate Restorations” series

Even if he isn’t a movie person, I’d still have to mention The Martian

Brian

From the Earth to the Moon

I recommend Mayday, aka Air Crash Investigation. Very good analysis of, well, air crash investigations.

Mythbusters

My wife loves this. It’s free, she’s supporting the library, and they’ll search for things, make recommendations and they’re always ordering disks from far away.

And in our case, it’s a good brisk walk away, so she’s getting exercise. She’s so happy to get a call or an email that something came in (that she may have forgotten all about).

And they’ve got a table set up outside if you want contactless pickup.

I was gonna say that! :pouting_cat:
Good fun, they don’t mess up often, and he can have fun finding when they do.

I very much appreciate all of the replies. I’ve now got $400 worth of DVD’s in my Amazon cart so I think we should be good for a while. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find a region 1 version of “The Repair Shop” but at least I can watch it on Netflix.

Thanks Dopers!

You could just give him a subscription to Netflix. They have many DVD’s that could be sent to him.

I realize you’re full up with suggestions, but one more? The Science of Stupid, Richard Hammond is the presenter, it’s funny AF and the science is usually spot on. Plus, it’s people racking themselves up, which is always amusing.

That’s actually a pretty good idea, as long as the facility is helpful about assisting him with the returns. And you could do the setup and maintenance of his queue.

This is a bit of a left-field idea, but, if it’s something you can do, it might be useful.

If you still have access to a DVD burner, you could consider putting online videos on a DVD for him to play. Most DVD burning software these days includes the option to burn as video.

Don’t know if this is practical for you, but, if it is, you can probably find a bunch of stuff. YouTube kinda created an educational video renaissance. It basically replaced all the educational TV I used to watch (which is good, since the TV channels seemed to stop making them.)

Right. Just do the 2 at a time and make sure they are sent back promptly he could get 2-4 a week.

Earthflight is on Blu Ray from Amazon. Stunning photography of migrating birds on different continents. My husband and I enjoyed it a lot.
