I see DVD-Recorders selling for under $100 and the low $100s. What is a good easy to use, reliable and fairly inexpensive unit?

What features should I look for?
Do any record in 1080i?
Are there any issues I should know about concerning recording from DVR to DVD?
Legal or Technical?

There’s always some wisenheimer in threads like this who suggests something way out of the OP’s price range … it may as well be me. 😃

I have a [Sony VRD-VC20](http://www.amazon.com/Sony-VRDVC20-DVDirect-DVD-Recorder/dp/B00092PV6C/sr=8-1/qid=1172182410/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/002-1118911-8872861?ie=UTF8&s=electronics), which Amazon is currently selling for $218, and I _love_ it. I’ve had it since [August 2005](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=328333). At first I had it hooked up to my VCR, but since this past October it’s been connected to my TiVo.

The only thing I’ve found is that _everything_ that appears on screen gets recorded – volume changes, pauses, etc. That didn’t happen with the VCR. It’s just a minor thing, though.

You just missed a deal on [Woot](http://www.woot.com) for a Lite-On DVD Recorder for $69.99. Maybe they’ll have it again or during the next wootoff.

Thanks, I think my primary use is going to be dumping DVR to DVD instead to VHS. The DVR is getting full of can’t erase items.

Are Lite-on good quality? I remember when they were #2 in the CD-recorders for computers. If so, this could be perfect.
