I was going to recommend an Altima Coupe - I have one, and it’s fun as hell to drive. It’s front-wheel drive, with no AWD option, and at first I thought “oh, front-wheel will handle snow pretty well”.
Then I saw that you are in Upstate NY. If you’re used to driving in heavy snow with an AWD, nothing else will feel the same. I’d probably recommend to stick with a new (or slightly used) Impreza wagon, if you’re looking for a smallish wagon type body style with AWD. Heck, you may be able to find a certified pre-owned WRX in your price range.
I’ve been asked to consider a truck as well. I’m not a big fan of trucks, mostly because the weight distribution does funny things, especially in snow. But we don’t have anything capable of hauling large objects and there’s probably going to be at least one more move in the near future. My other problems are that unless I get an extended cab there is no room for anyone or anything else. Then, I can’t keep anything safe in the bed unless I get a locking cover or a camper shell (which kinda negates the reason for getting a truck) or a Ridgeline (which is out of my price range.) I can build several from different companies that are within my range and have an extended cab and 4WD, but they still aren’t that cheap and it feels like you don’t get a lot for what you pay for. Anyone have any suggestions on that point?
Oh, I’ve thought about a used Baja, but I’m not sure about the bed length. I think it comes available to 5 feet. Is that enough bed for a truck?
You can haul a lot in the back of a Outback etc with the seats folded down. You are right about all the disads of a truck. Most of your hauling could be done with the Outback (or even the Volvo C30), and for one move, it’s likely better just to rent a truck.
I’d rather think I addressed the larger question that the OP should have asked: “do I REALLY need a second car”. Not to mention asking for the crucial item of data “did he and his fiancee live together”.
Where exactly did I declare the OP’s opinions (what ever they are) erroneous?
