[The Good Old Days](http://www.amazon.com/Good-Old-Days-Perpetrators-Bystanders/dp/1568521332/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1383753147&sr=1-1&keywords=the+good+old+days+the+holocaust+as+seen+by+its+perpetrators+and+bystanders)is a chilling story of the holocaust taken from the accounts of the perpetrators.

I’d nominate [_The End_](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_End:_Hitler%27s_Germany_1944-45), by Ian Kershaw.

A good look at the hopelessness and desperation near the end.

> The Forgotten Soldier by Guy Sajer, war memoir of a German soldier in the Russian campaign.

A terrific read [whether it’s fact _or_ fiction](http://members.shaw.ca/grossdeutschland/sajer.htm).
