For the Great-with-a-capital-G violinists, you need to add David Oistrakh and Leonid Kogan. For performers who are still alive, Maxim Vengerov definitely deserves a mention. Hillary Hahn also has some outstanding records. There was also the truly stellar Michael Rabin, unfortunately his CDs are hard to come by, which is a bloody shame. There’s an LP titled “Michael Rabin - In Memoriam”, that’s a must-have for violin lovers but it’s impossible to find.
[/QUOTE]

I seccond this Oistrakh recommendation, Look for his Clair de Lune on YouTube…

For something in a rock structure, Gordon Withers just released an album that is Jawbox (a 90’s pop punk band) covers on cello and violin. The best part is the proceeds from the album supports Jawbox’s singer’s sons rare condition.

Have you considered getting her a [chocolate violin](http://www.chocolamour.co.uk/) to tide her over? 🙂

Skimmed the thread, didn’t see it. But I’d like to recommend the Emerson String Quartet’s version of Bach’s “Art of the Fugue”. It is a good string rendition of a (usually) keyboard-based work.

[QUOTE=Yeticus Rex]
I also gave her a gift subscription to [Strings](http://www.stringsmagazine.com/) magazine, she enjoys that as well…are there any other subscriptions or books that might be helpful?

[The Strad](http://www.thestrad.com) is a great magazine. What is sadly not available on the website is their violin-porn high-quality photography of top-class instruments.

Tell you what **Cyberhwk** …I’ll give my wife that set first to listen to and I’ll let you know how she likes it…from what we’ve seen here in this thread, it sounds like it’s a can’t miss. Some of the stuff should be delivered to our doorstep tomorrow. (I just checked: Podger’s CDs won’t be here until 4/1, so maybe I’ll give her the Paderewski or the Haskil & Grumiaux CDs that are in the first shipment.)

I was thinking that I would give her one item a week to listen to before I give her the next one.

Go figure…Joshua Bell’s “Romance of the Violin” and Yo-Yo Ma’s “Appassionato” arrived yesterday. I gave her the Joshua Bell CD first this morning by loading it on her Itunes in her business computer and then synced it to her Itouch to listen to at home. Her first impression when we fired it up was “Wow…he’s pretty good!” Translation: “That dude knows how to smoke the strings!”

[Claude Lamothe](http://www.postedecoute.ca/catalogue/album/claude-lamothe-vivace) is a fantastic cellist. I have his albums ‘nu’ and ‘cru’ and just noticed he’s got another called ‘vivace’
His live performances are an excellent blend of hard rock and classical styles, but so far his recordings have avoided the use of his electric cello.

You may always want to take a look at the [Yoshido Brothers](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RERXiliJfdI), who play shamisen.

By the way, another very important (and very enjoyable) violinist is Stéphane Grappelli, easily the best-known jazz violinist.

I agree about Michael Rabin, who died so tragically young, at 35. And yes, I have the LP.
